Might I suggest trying one of the hotels in Jersey City, near the Newport PATH subway station. It is 15 minutes to and from New York City and the PATH runs until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. It's possible for your dates this would be the area with availability and in your price range.

There is a Doubletree Suites hotel across the street from the PATH station -- which itself is directly under a Courtyard by Marriot hotel.

I know a lot of people here do recommend staying in Manhattan, and all for the right reasons. However, IMO, Jersey City is no longer a ride than is Long Island City. The fare for the PATH is exactly the same as the NYC subway -- $2.50 per ride, and you can also get discounted multi-day/trip passes.

In addition, you get the joy of seeing the skyline of Manhattan all lit up at night from a waterfront park, perfect for photos!

Yes, but the hotels right on top of the PATH usually aren't substantially cheaper than a hotel in Manhattan. The OP picked a budget hotel in Edgewater to get a super low rate.

Just checked the Courtyard and they don;t have rooms for 5 people. The Doubletree does - at about $300 (a great bargain IMHO - if those random dates I picked are when the OP will be there).

Consider the Milburn Hotel on the Upper West Side - htpp://milburnhotel.com this is a family hotel and looks like it will meet your needs.

At this late date I would ring them which is suggested on their website for stays of a week or longer, rollaway bed, special requests. Toll free (800) 833-9622 or (212) 362-1006

The small kitchen is very handy for drinks/snacks. Breakfast included in the rates. Good location, close proximity to the underground, eating etc.

Good luck and report back on what you decide.

Looks like Milburn is booked for easter week (not surprising) and doesn't have rooms for 5. But may be worthwhile contacting them to be sure.

I don't see where OP has given the ages of the "kids" - are they actually small children - or adults who just happen to be your children. Can make a big difference in the price.
