Tram or rail routes in Vegas?
 

We are staying at The Luxor and rather then rent a car or taxi up the strip, I would like to take advantage ofd the mass transit in the form of thr Trams and now I hear there is a mono rail. I know you can get on the tram at (Excalibur?) and off at the Mirage. Am I right? What about the other side of the strip, MGM, Paris, Venetian? Is anything linked to them? Where does the monorail travel? Thanks in advance.

There is a free tram between Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay. There is a free tram between the Mirage and Treasure Island. The regular monorail runs quite a ways back behind most of the hotels (MGM, Flamingo, Harrah's, etc.) Personally, I think it is rather useless because of the walking involved to get to it (just my thoughts). By the time you walk that far you might as well have walked on the Strip to your destination.

There is a bus on the Strip called "Duece". It's $2 a ride or $5 for daily pass. http://www.vegas.com/transportation/buses.html

It stops in front of most of the major hotels, but you still might have to do some walking because many of the hotels are set so far back from the street. The monorail is rather expensive as well. It might be beneficial if one is traveling between the convention center and MGM but it's not cheap for hop on/hop off getting about.

Just do a Google for the LV monorail and it will come up with a map. Just remember nothing is to scale :-)

Incidentally, there is NO monorail or tram (free or otherwise) from Excalibur to the Mirage.

Walking is the easiest if you can manage it. We go to Vegas alot and over the yrs have found that our feet move faster then traffic in many cases !!

Ditto on what Lori said. I took the monorail once for the novelty but it twice as long to get to my destination than if I had just walked, and I probably put the same mileage on my shoes.

The Mandalay-Excalibur tram is good. Other than that, I either walk or cab it because I can't stand wasting so much time with the public transportation in Vegas. I don't know what they were thinking when they came up with that monorail idea the stations are just so far away from anywhere you'd want to be.

It also depends when you will be in Vegas. You might find it hard alking from place to place if it is 112 degrees!

Luxor is connected to Excalibur and Mandalay bay by a free monorail.

The pay monorail runs behind the other side of the strip, from MGM to Sahara with a few stops in between.

There is a bus running 24/7 along the strip, I found this to be the most convenient. I think it's $2 one-way or $5 24-hr pass... and it runs all the way to the downtown.

There was also a trolley for tourists running through all casinos. Not sure if it's still there.

It will be a long walk from Excalibur to the monorail, and IMO not worth it.

As the others have mentioned, I would suggest "The Deuce" (our bus system on the Strip). They typically stop out front every hotel or every other. Depends on when you are coming, if coming now or soon while it is still hot, and you are only going a few hotels away, the fastest and coolest (won't have to stand outside at the bustop) method would be a cab ride. Cabs are available at every hotel's front door. If going down the Strip a ways or going downtown to Fremont St., then take the Deuce. There is also a free monorail from Monte Carlo to the Bellagio, but it has been closed lately due to construction behind the Bellagio, so you may want to check on that.
