Train to Seward?

I know this sounds corny to some, my apologies But we have our hearts set on taking the train somewhere (have never been and would just like to!) And we were thinking the Seward train, but wondering about the time frame. I would like to spend more than just the day in Seward. Is there a return train that leaves from Seward in the morning like after the AM train arrives, or does it just stay there all day until 6:00pm? Just wondering, because we don't really want to stay in Anchorage a night after the train, then drive on to Homer in the morning. Would rather just drive right away. Any ideas?

Sorry I put this on twice by mistake :)

You did not specify a time of year so I'll assume you are talking about the summer season. There is only one train a day in each direction. Anchorage-Seward leaves in the morning and arrives just before noon. The Seward anchorage train leaves in the late afternoon and arrives in the evening.

Rent a car in Seward? Drive to Homer, spend your few days in Homer, return to Seward & drop off car, take train back.

Or just rent in Seward & drop off when you get back to Anchorage. I don't know if the one-way charges on the rental are too horrible, you'll have to check. And, I think there are only one or two car rental places in Seward - but it is possible.

Only car rental company in Seward is Hertz. If doing one way to Anchorage, expect rates in the $200/day range.

No there is no other train, only 1 round trip per day. Don't know if it is possible but if you are there when the cruiseships come in- you MAY be able to purchase their early morning contracted trains??? Expect to pay in the range of $100 vs $60. Determine what day you are there and see if any ships in. Available only that single day.

Northmnole...if you are corny, then we were too. My children had never been on a "real" train. We got on at Girdwood, and went to Seward for the day..then back to Girdwood. Got the biggest kick out of stopping for hikers...how cool...just like hitchhikers...they were real mountain men..been on the mountain 2 weeks..DIRTY..but so interesting to my kids. We got to see some gorgeous views, not accesible from the highway. Lots of fun...speaking of corny, my kids were delighted because they had a snack cart too!!! We don't get out of Texas much..hahahhaha Have a great trip

Very cool, thanks Visormom! Did you rent a car in anchorage and leave it in Girdwood?

No...we flew into Anchorage..rented car there...stayed in Girdwood, and returned it to Anchorage....great fun!!
