Train or bus from NJ to NYC
 

Hi. Anyone know the name of a train or bus from Newark to NYC? Arrive 8:30 on a Tuesday night. Staying in Times Square. Thanks.

Train is fine if you don;t have much luggage- but there are a couple of changes from Air Train to New Jersey Transit to subay.

If you prefer not to deal with schlepping your stuff around take a shuttle bus to Port Authority - which is practically on top of Times Square (you don;t say eactly where your hotel is).

I assume you mean Newark Airport?

The first time is when it gets to the Newark Airport station, the second time is when it arrives at New York Penn Station. The letter designations are the train line, which in your case doesn't matter.

The cost is about $15. From the terminals, take the monorail to the airport rail station. From Terminal C it's about a 5 to 7 minute trip.

The answer as to which is best - taxi, bus, or train - depends on how much luggage you have and how many are traveling.

I agree that a car is easiest and most comfortable. If you can't stand the idea of spending what will probably be $60 after tolls and tip, the Express bus that goes to Port Authority bus terminal is $14/person. Your hotel is not very far from the bus terminal but you'll probably still want to take a taxi from there that would be another $5 or so.

If you're healthy adults there isn't really any reason to take a cab from Porth Authority to your hotel. Given the traffic in that area, you'd get to your hotel just as fast by walking then taking a cab. Seriously.

The airport bus drops you near corner of 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. Keep walking east on 42nd Street to 7th Avenue. Walk south 2 blocks to 40th Street. Then walk east 1/2 block to your hotel.

You'll see the bright lights of Times Square area and lots of people on the streets.

Good grief the Port Authority is a confusing dump and to haul luggage from there to the hotel would be a royal pain in the neck.

Without a doubt, a door-to-door car service is the way to go.

A dump to one person is a transportation hub to another.

Millions of commuters go through Port Authority every day.

Besides, the airport bus doesn't stop inside Port Authority Bus Terminal. It stops on the street next to it.

Certainly, a car service for a predetermined price is the way to go, if they want to spend the money. Taxis are another option for door-to-door service.

I see many people on the streets of NYC pulling along their carry-on luggage to Penn Station, etc. It is done all the time.

I've schlepped my luggage through that area and agree it is a giant PIA especially trying to walk through Times Square.

The sidewalks will be too jammed packed to drag your luggage around unless you walk up 8th or 9th Avenues (forget Seventh Avenue or Broadway).

Agree with Gekko, get a cab.

They're arriving EWR, so a cab is a big mistake. Car service. Cheaper than a cab, and nicer.

Why is a cab from EWR a "big mistake"?????

The taxi commission that governs cabs from EWR has predefined fees.

Taking a cab from EWR is a big mistake for a few reasons:

1. The cabs are NOT New York City Yellow cabs. They are NJ cabs, with less regulation. Some are "gypsy cabs" -- crappy cars & scary drivers. I've only been in one taxi accident here in NYC, and it was with a clueless NJ cab driver on 10th Ave.

2. The cost is high. Last week I arrived EWR, thinking I was arriving LGA, and I didn't have a car service reserved, to I took a crappy cab. Cost was $66 to Manhattan not including tip & toll. Car service would have been cheaper.

3. The cab line can be LONG. Last week I waited in a line for over 30 minutes for that crappy, beat-up, overpriced cab.

Yes, I agree with using a car service out of EWR and not taking a cab which is what I meant to write.

A car service is usually cheaper and a much more pleasant experience.

That's what I assumed, GoTravel, but I wanted to clarify for other readers.
