Train from Anchorage to Seward
 

We are taking a cruise from Seward(Sept 11, what a date!) and need to take the train from Anchorage. When does the train leave and how long does it take? What is the "cruise bus" and is that a better option?

cruise bus, means that you take the bus one way and train one way. at least, I think that is what you are refering to. It is one scenic ride on both the hwy and train. although, the train is the best.

We did the opposite last year: train from Seqrd to Anhorage. I think it said to allow 5 hours..unfortunately a HUGE boulder rolled over and blocked teh tracks so we got stuck on teh mountain for 2 hrs and then they moved it enough to get a bus up to us.
MOuntain scenery was fabulous & I liked teh fact we could get up and walk around teh train altho you are seatedat a table for 4 which was tight. DO NOT bring big bags..they won't fit.

Thanks guys, We are staying in Anchorage pre cruise so will be lugging our bags to Seward. Surely there is a baggage car or something. Others must need to take bulky stuff. Any suggestions, anyone?

There is baggage cars. Similar to that of an airport, but a little easier to manage.

Not sure from your post, but you are talking about booking the train yourself direct from the Railroad, and NOT using the cruise contracted train. This is my ONLY recommendation, since the cruise train gets in too late for activities.

I only recommend the regular run which leaves early morning getting in about 11am. THEN make some plans and do not be in a rush to get on your ship. A Kenai Fjords boat tour is my top suggestion, excellent for varied wildlife and close up glacier viewing. FAR superior to anything from your cruise ship. Many other activities to also consider. The bus would be my last choice. The routing of the train is superior.

You are going in a less than ideal timeframe for your cruise. Be WELL prepared in your attire with good rain gear, and necessary 2 pair of walking shoes. Plan your port times carefully, it will be dusk 7pm.
