Towns in Cape Cod for daytrip

We're staying in Plymouth and would like to visit Cape Cod for the day. I've never been to Cape Cod or Plymouth. Which towns do you recommend? Restaurants and shops? How far away from Plymouth? Thanks for any help.

This weekend, right? Check the weather reports. If the weather is fine, I suggest you head all the way to Cape Cod National Seashore. Visit the Nat'l Seashore Visitor's center, Marconi Beach, and take a nature trail through the marsh. Have a nice lunch and shop in artsy Wellfleet. Maybe stop in Orleans or Falmouth for dinner on your way back.

If the weather is not so fine, maybe stay closer to home, no further than Hyannis or Orleans, with in-town shopping playing a larger role. The beaches are nothing special in Hyannis.

Or maybe take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard and shop there. Or stick close to home and visit Plimoth Plantation.

Forgot to put my dates. We would arrive in Plymouth on Wed, Sep. 21 and depart on Tues, Sep. 27. We have a convention from Fri. night til Sunday so we would go to Cape Cod then.

Thanks for the suggestions, capxxx. I will print out your suggestions and take them with us.

Be aware that when you're driving on the Cape, you rarely can see the water. That being said, I think the drive along the north side of the Cape, Rt. 6A is much more picturesque than Rts 28 (tacky) or 6 (divided highway until Harwich). 6A has cute towns, antique shops, etc. It ends at Rt.28 in Orleans, if you want to go that far. You can pick it up just over the Sagamore bridge (Rt.3). Make sure you go on a weekday. Fri-Sun is a nightmare for traffic, sometimes back-ups of many miles if the weather is good. You should be fine on a weekday.

Spend a day in Provincetown, you won't regret it.
