Town of Volcano may need to evacuate
Possible bad news for the residents of Volcano -- according to today's news article, "Pele's poison gas could empty town":

Not surprised that Hilo Tribune doesn't have news of this yet -- our Garden Island newspaper (Kaua`i) usually gets news into their paper a day or two _after_ it's in the Honolulu papers. Sigh....
And here's another headline in this afternoon's "Breaking News" column -- Honolulu Advertiser:
"1st explosive eruption since 1924 reported at Kilauea"

I just read that auntiemaria from the KGMB website.
A small explosion occurred at Halema‘uma‘u Crater early at 2:58 a.m. this morning that was originally reported as an earthquake. The explosion scattered debris over an area of about 75 acres, covering a portion of Crater Rim Drive and damaging the Halema‘uma‘u overlook. No lava was erupted as part of the explosion, suggesting that the activity was driven by hydrothermal or gas sources.
Whenever there was any volcanic activity, tsunami warning or earthquake news my mom used to call from the mainland...she heard it before we did!

More detail from today's (3/20) Honolulu Advertiser in terms of what's closed as a result of the explosion. (See the sidebar of the article, in particular).
