I loved that quote, too 
DP and I both got the dreaded cruise ship virus two years ago. Between us ... we lost ELEVEN pounds (and neither of us is overweight).
We joked that we'd sailed on the S.S. Bulimia and that they'd fill the ships if they advertised it as a weight loss cruise.
But it was no joke -- and believe me, it did not last "one day" as that article implied. We were violently ill for at least three days and were weak afterwards. We barely left the cabin--and there were plenty of others on board who were also sick.
I'm doing another cruise in two weeks and keeping my fingers crossed!

We were violently ill on a cruise a couple of years ago. We were just talking about that. It was a cruise we had planned for a long time to South America and up the Amazon. Of course I fell ill just a couple of days before we arrived in Manaus and completely missed the port even though we were there for two days. Yes indeed - saying you are sick for a day is crazy. As songdoc says you are weak for days after as well. The thing is the numbers of passengers who are ill is not correctly reported. They only report the number who saw a Doctor on board. In our case and I know with others as well - by the time we knew what was happening with fellow passengers you don't bother with the Doctor. They can't really give you anything as most of us come prepared with our own meds for various complants. They just order plain rice and liquids for you and tell you to stay in your stateroom. On our cruise they reported in the paper 20% of the passengers were sick. Believe me it was more like 50% or better. Every night the dining room was half full - we were dropping like flies. They flew people from the CDC in and changes were made on the ship but it was a little too late.
All that being said we have cruised many times since then without incident.

Not surprised there ae numerous complaints for the past few years about the uncleanliness of the NCL Hawaii ships. Read passenger reviews in Cruise Critic if you can stomach it or www.cruise-addicts.com.

LOL" SS Bulimia. ".. I throw up when I get on any boat so I have been spared this particular nightmare but it seems to be getting worse as the years go by rather than being figured out and prevented

Alas, that's what the seasickness patch is for! I use a half a patch before we cruise and a pleasant side effect is that it corrects my vision. I just love the open sea.
In the NCL case there has been a hige bru ha ha about american workers not working as hard as foreign crew and unclean areas all over the ship. Two cruise friends went on the Pride of Aloha ship and one saw a dead rat on the ground at the buffet (think of the jokes that caused) and one person had a metal bolt in their scrambled eggs.

My daughter has worked on the Pride of Hawaii as a pastry chef. The American crew works incredibly hard for very little money. Viruses will often affect people in such close quarters. NCL has petitioned the government to go into international waters so that they may hire foreign crew for their HI cruises. This is not to get harder workers but cheaper workers who they are not required to pay overtime or benefits.
