Total Vacation Mental Block VT-Montreal

It's been a long time since I've posted here, but I can't think of a better place to help me with my problem. For the first time, I am having a total, complete mental block on planning my family's summer vacation. Please be kind to me Fellow Fodorites, as I explain my problem.

My family decided last year that Summer 2007 we would go to Montreal. No problems with that UNTIL my husband decided to throw in a two day side trip to Vermont first. Years ago, when my now freshman daugher was in 4th grade, she did a report on Vermont. Since Vermont is close to Montreal my husband decided we should do a two day visit there too. And that was the beginning of my vacation planning meltdown.

For whatever reason, I can't seem to wrap my head around planning this trip. Yes, I can price out everything, but for some reason I can't seem to make it come together in my mind. I think part of the problem lies with the fact that *I* really have no desire to stop in Burlington. Or maybe it's due to finding it annoying to figure out where to stay at, car rental prices from Burlington to Montreal and then figure out prices again in Montreal. When my husband suggested we should also look at B&B's, I thought John Waters would call me soon about his new show CourtTV.

Can anyone help me remove this mental block? Should I simply state we should leave out Burlington? OTOH, maybe I wouldn't mind going to Burlington, but dropping it would make life much easier. I don't know what the problem is, I certainly was able to plan Vegas/North Rim of Grand Canyon years ago with no problems. But the block is there and Summer of 2007 is sneaking up on me fast. My husband is not the travel planner, I am, although at the moment, I'm ready to hand the duties over to him. Of course, that would probably only make things worse. HELP ME (but please be gentle)!!!!

Where do you live? It may be cheaper for you to fly into Burlington and drive to montreal. Its only two hours away.

Hi Celfan:

It probably was cheaper, but I finally admitted to myself I simply didn't want to go to Burlington. My husband realized this too and said it was okay to drop the Burlington part, which I did and went ahead and booked our vacation Thursday. We're flying in to Montreal and staying at the Hotel St. Paul, which is the vacation I was really had envisioned in my own mind. I guess the moral of my sad mental block story is to be honest with yourself and your spouse with what how you "see" the vacation. Usually my husband and I are on the same page for vacation, but the whole going to Burlington due to an old 4th grade state report really messed with my mind LOL.

What exactly is the problem? Vermont is more than just Burlington. What do you want to see and do? There are many accommodations, from motels to B&Bs. What type do you want to stay? Do you want lakeside, do you want mountain view, what?

And Northern Vermont is not far from Montreal. Will you have a rental car in Canada? If yes, just drive it down. [But check with rental agency first.]

If you're in the Burlington area, don't forget to stop by the Ben & Jerry's factory! :D
