Toronto to New England

We would love to do a road trip from Canada to Maine, NH,Cape Cod area and Boston. Summer 2009. 14-19 days .

Please help me get started. I am not sure where to start and would prefer to do a route that would take us through different states.Thanks.

Where are you starting from? Toronto? Niagara Falls? Montreal? It will make a difference.

The title says Toronto.

With that many days, you can go to lots of places. I'd probably go up 401 and cross into NY state at Thousand Island. Cut across the Adirondack Park (if you're interested) and then follow US2 across Vermont, Hampshire and Maine to Bar Harbor.

Then, follow the coast south to Boston, go out to Cape Cod as well as down to Newport, RI. You can cut through Connecticut (if you want to hit all 6 NE states) or take the Masspike (I-90) west to the Berkshires in western MA. Then through the NYThurway back to Niagara Falls and go home.

Just very generally.

Thanks for the great start rkkwan.
Yes its from Toronto.

The area is so vast and I found all the info very overwhelming. I just needed a general idea so that I can research in more detail.

I have shortlisted the Adirondacks, White mountains , Boston and Cape cod, but could not figure out a return route so I will look at the Berkshires. Thanks again.

On the way back, also jump off the NYThruway to visit the Finger Lakes region just to the south. It's pretty.

My apologies for my first post - obviously my brain isn't working tonight.

Anyway, I would second the suggestion to cross at the 1000 Islands and I'd check out Lake Placid for the first night and then drive through the high peaks and take the ferry to Burlington, VT and spend another night. Then you can make your way over to Franconia Notch/Lincoln, NH and I'd recommend the Kancamungus Highway (Rt 112) over to Conway - it's a very pretty ride even if it takes you a little south. I don't know much about Maine/Boston/Cape Cod, so I can't help you there.

I also agree with the pp that if you have time on your way back west, it might be nice to break up the monotony of the NY Thruway by heading a little south and checking out the wineries in the Finger Lakes. Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake are my favourites for that.

The mountains of NY, VT, and NH are very beautiful and there are many pretty towns to visit.
