Topeka hotel/motel off I-70

We'll be staying just one night in Topeka, on our way to St. Louis. Can anyone recommend a very inexpensive hotel/motel right off I-70?

I haven't stayed overnight in Topeka, but the Econolodge in Junction City, 60 miles west is inexpensive and aceptable.

I can recommend you don't stay at either Motel 6 in Topeka.

Thanks. Anyone have ideas for Topeka? A Comfort Inn or something like that?

Go 20 miles further east to Lawrence.

The Comfort Inn in Lawrence is expensive for what it is.

If you can stand to be in the car for two more hours, just make it to Kansas City. There are lots of hotel choices in downtown KC, right off of I-70. If you want decent and affordable, go with the Marriott. If you want something historic, go with the newly renovated President Hotel. Or you can drive less than five miles south off I-70 and stay at The Westin Crown Center Hotel. Lots of dining choices there too.

I think Topeka will be the place to stop. This is the beginning of a LONG road trip, and just a one night stop to sleep. So, someplace close to I-70 for easy on and off the freeway? Free parking a must.

While it's been years since I stayed there, the Holiday Inn in Topeka was perfectly nice and right off I-70.

I like Topeka; it's a great place to stop. The mall, Wal-Mart, many motels, etc. are on or near Wanamaker Road. I think they are trying to revive the downtown.

Google "Tripadvisor Topeka Hotels" to get an idea of travler reviews, rates, etc. I see they have a Sleep Inn (which must be rather new).

There are many places to stay right off I-70 at the Wanamaker exit. I have stayed many times at the Clubhouse Inn--no complaints, and they have an early evening "cocktail" reception and a buffet breakfast. (I'm not saying these are really fantastic, but they are included.) There are more places if you continue down Wanamaker toward West Ridge Mall...Courtyard, Fairfield, Comfort Inn, etc.

I think it's only about an hour more to suburban Kansas City, isn't it? There are plenty of places to stay, and chances for a much better meal. But, if you're set on staying in Topeka, then the Clubhouse comes up first on tripadvisor.com

If you're coming from Denver (I don't know that you are) and leave early, you can get here in plenty of time to enjoy a nice dinner and better hotel choices.

If you decide to do that, we'll be happy to give you some more ideas.

PS Is the Chihuly exhibit still in St. Louis? It would be wonderful to see.

Less than an hour to the west side of the metro area.

Make sure you get off I70 at the Wanamaker exit. There's plenty of chain motels there to choose from. This area is fine.

Do not get off at the South Topeka exit. You would not want any of the motels at that exit.

Thanks, everyone. We will want to stay in Topeka, it's half-way between Denver and St. Louis for us. We are really wimpy road-trippers, and don't want to drive on to K.C.
We'll take the Wanamaker exit, and avoid the South Topeka exit. Think we'll need a reservation for a Friday or Saturday night, late in August?

happytrailstoyou Aug 17th, 2006 06:50 AM

Make a reservation at a chain which lets you cancel before 4:00 or 6:00 day of arrival.
