What do you consider the Top 5 American Airports?

I know this sounds pretty generic/far-sweeping...but:

How about ANY non-hub or large-city airport? SFO, LAX, DFW, IAD, LGA, ORD...they're all the same: Huge, too many people, too many "stacked" departures, impossible parking.


That said...San Jose CA & Charlotte NC are both VERY easy to maneuver/get in, get out/.

Just wanted to post a NEGATIVE vote for SFO---gives you tourists one more thing to grouch about, right? It has the worst on time record of any airport in the country. Granted, this is because it's out in the Bay and the weather gets in the way, but it can be a total pain.It's currently in shambles for remodel, but from what we read in the papers still won't be much better after all the work is done! We try to fly in and out of San Jose.

Not a very big airport, but one of the newest and user friendliest is Pittsburgh---the ease of collecting luggage and renting a car or returning a rental car is truly amazing. Now if they could only do that in SF and move it off the bay..........I realize Pittsburgh is not a tourist destination, but maybe that's why they try harder, as the expression goes!
Would vote for LAX for large cities, major airports, but there the international terminal can be a disaster. Oh well, life's not perfect!

We like the Mpls./St Paul Airport a lot. It has been undergoing construction for a while and that has been a problem but love all the food places close to the gates and lots of newstands, gifts, etc. Especially good if you have a layover. WE also are pleased by all the new things at LAX (our home airport) as we hated the old airport. Now there is food available other than in an old cafeteria. Also very pleasant surroundings. Also like TAmpa and Orlando Airports. Think Atlanta is pretty easy to get around now days too. Still not crazy about Denver. Wind about blew us over at the car rentals and no gas stations within 15 miles of the car return. Also no hotels if your flight is cancelled because of bad weather. Leaves a lot to be desired for a new airport.

I agree that the very large (hub) airports should not be included in the top five. I suggest Columbus, Ohio as one of my favorites. It is easy to locate, easy to park, easy to find ground transportation, good baggage service and is currently undergoing improvements. Services inside the terminal are good, too.

West Palm Beach, Florida is good. Don't like SFO, LAX or DFW. San Jose is pretty good except for parking and if you don't fly Reno Air. SWA is the best out of San Jose as it is handy and next to the food places. I like San Diego, especially since they have renovated it. However seating is at a premium which is not nice.

I have to admit, it's my departure airport, but regardless, I have to second the nomination for Pittsburgh Int'l. The disadvantage is that it is 90+ percent controlled by USAirways, so we don't get anything in the way of decent fares, but as far as the airport goes, it's possible to actually spend an afternoon there shopping, browsing and eating and while we don't get any airfare bargains, the stores and shops are not permitted to charge more than similar or the same shops do away from the airport. It's clean and beautiful, easy to navigate, and the kind of airport where if you were stuck during a winter storm would not be such a bad place to be! Dallas Ft Worth and Charlotte NC were decent airports to fly into. Detroit and Philadelphia are the pitts (no pun intended).
