Too Young to see Disney's High School Musical?

I just purchased tickets to take the grand girls to see this Broadway style muscial. Now, I have having second thoughts. They are in 4th grade and 2nd grade. They both loved the movie and I thought this would be a good way to expose them to a little theater. Plus, I really would like to see it myself!

After you reassure me that I'm not a total lunatic, where should we eat near The Fox Theater in Atlanta?

Remember.......I don't want to break the bank on any fine dining for the youngsters.

So, you don't think they are too young?

Their mother seems to think they would love it.

A friend and I have just purchased tickets for ourselves plus our 4th grade daughters. I think it'll be a terrific girls night out!
4th grade is the perfect age for this musical and I'm sure the 2nd grader will enjoy it too... (if it finishes late maybe she could take an afternoon nap beforehand?)

A nap? Yeah, right! Won't that be a great trick? Now I feel better since you are taking 4th graders, highflyer. What city are you seeing it in?

Yeah, I guess I'm more likely to take a nap than your granddaughter!

We're going to Worcester, MA in January. The tix are holiday gifts for the girls!

Up to the individual child, but I took my 2nd grade daughter to see Peter Pan and she was mesmerized by the entire event. Just be sure the littlest one can see without a big fat head in front of her. If the theater doesn't offer boosters, bring a phone book.

Particularly since they have seen the movie and know the story, it will be a grand event.

Enjoy.

There is a restaurant across the street from the Fox, can't recall the name.

Iceeu2, your girls will love the show, and will probably hold up better than you do!

There are several places to eat near the Fox: directly across the street is the restaurant of the Georgian Terrace Hotel. It's the Savoy Bar and Grill; we were there over the summer and I can't remember how much it was---dinner could be had for less than $20 per, as I remember. Our food was good, not outstanding, but we were looking for a nice setting and a place close enough to park the car ONCE. You may want to check out their website: http://www.thegeorgianterrace.com/dining/index.cfm

Another possibility is Mick's, a popular Atlanta diner-type restaurant just one block south of the Fox. You can park right next to the theater for usually around $15. If it's cold the money is well-spent, as the wind whistles down Peachtree Street right there as though in a wind tunnel. Mick's has a variety of things, burgers, chicken fingers (kid cuisine!), meatloaf and mashed potatoes, etc. They are known for their enormous desserts which would feed a family of four for about a month

We usually go to Mick's or to the Colonnade, on Cheshire Bridge, but it's usually packed and I wouldn't recommend it for your GrandGirl outing. Have a great time!

What's the Italian place near there? Bara something? Is that too over the top for them? Is the Marriott Midtown Suites within walking distance? Say like after the show, will others be going that direction?

I usually have the real icee with me when in the Fox area so I don't have to drive or pay extreme attention to the surroundings. Now I just know I won't get him into a theater with a bunch of screaming little girls!

You must be thinking about Baraonda? http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/g...id=oid%3A52191

I haven't eaten there--

Don't know if the Mariott Midtown is within walking distance--I am usually driving the other way. That would be a good question for the desk clerk who has probably been asked the same thing a thousand times, lol.

I think the girls will love it! I think they are at the ideal age for this one.

You are gonna be the hippest grandma when their friends hear about this . . . and dinner out to boot??? They didn't make Grandmas like that when I was little.

Baraonda is VERY good. Great pasta and pizza. 1/2 block from Fox entrance.

Another casual Italian is Little Azio's. I ate there after the Fox last week. Maybe 4 blocks north on Peachtree. Order at counter - varied pasta combinations and pizza and food is brought to your table. There's a Noodles next door as well as a sandwich shop.

Mary Mac's Tea Room is an Atlanta institution. About 2 block south on Ponce de Leon.

If you head north on Peachtree to 5th and turn right one block, you will be at a great Chinese restaurant (Mu Lan) and a good Greek restaurant. Spice is across the intersection, but pricey.

Across the street is the new Hotel Indigo (they gutted the old Days Inn just next door to the Georgian Terrace). Small room but great location. I can't place the Marriott.

That area has really changed in the last 2 years. LOTS of new condos and thus lots of folks walking to restaurants and back home. It's not the same ole Peachtree you may remember from 3+ years ago.

Oooh! The Marriott is on 14th street. That's a minimum of 12 blocks down Peachtree or Juniper. Maybe too much for happy girls on little legs. If you drive, my favorite place to park is the Georgian Terrace garage across the street. You could grab MARTA for a couple of stops.

starrsville, thanks for letting me know about the Hotel Indigo. Looks as if the location will be perfect for all of us girls.

bayougal, I do as much as I can with the girls. Today we are going to Atlanta to see the "real" Santa for the 9th time. Photos and video with the same guy for every visit. My prayers are always to let Santa Nash live as long as they believe! Guess it's really more for me than for them!

After Santa, we will do lunch at Maggiano's or The Cheesecake Factory. Yep, they think their Cracker is pretty cool. The 4th grader had a sleepover recently and I heard her tell one of the other girls that her grandmother was really great. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face all night!

Hey...finally, I think I may be getting into the Christmas spirit!

i2, the rooms at the Indigo are small but cool. Also check the Georgian Terrace next door. Many (most?) of the units were converted to condos - and then back to hotel. The rooms I've stayed in were huge. I really enjoyed one with the round wall facing south on Ponce. It was VERY cool to wake up and see Stone Mountain outside the window the next morning. The round "tower" section kinda felt like staying in a castle.

Most of the Buckhead hotels offer free car service within 2 miles. Maybe the Midtown hotels do as well.

Iceeu2, my nephews see the Phipps santa every year, too. They came down from Montreat NC (where they now live with their mom and new dad) for Thanksgiving and braved the Friday crowds! Even with the sign up and the beepers, I know how crazy that can get . . . you are wonderful to create that lovely tradition with them.

i2, A great treat would be tea at the Buckhead Ritz. Most year they do a Teddy Bear tea. So cute to see the little girls (and some boys) dressed up, dining with their favorite bears.

Great idea starrsville!

Now, let me ask you Georgia people this? Yesterday my boss was telling me about The Pink Pig. She was like a child describing it and telling me of the time she went. Is she making this up?

I think she has lost it!

OMY, Iceeu2, the PINK PIG IS IT! Now it is at Lenox, a funky ride set up outside (but in a tent so it is warm). In the "old Atlanta" days, the PP was a monorail suspended from the ceiling of the old downtown Rich's building. It was shaped like a pig--at least, the front and last cars were, and they were all PINK! When you exited you got a thick, woven satin badge to stick on your coat that read, "I Rode the Pink Pig." Honey, if you didn't have that on your coat after Christmas you were nuthin'! I wore it proudly until spring---well, you had to because the glue was so powerful you couldn't get it off your jacket. It practically bonded on my little wool princess coats.

My nephews ride the PP every year, too, on the day they see Santa. It's just one big day of lines, kids, moms, photos, etc., that they will remember FOREVER. DO IT!

The Rich's Pink Pig was THE event of the season. Sure, we dressed up, ate at the Magnolia Room, and visited Santa - but we made sure the Pink Pig sticker was on our coats before the yearly photo with Santa. One fabulous year the Pink Pig was suspended from the ceiling of the TOY DEPARTMENT! Oh, what a magical ride that was to see all the wondrous toys below you.

I've gone just about every year, as a child, as an aunt, as an honorary aunt (sometimes it was hard finding the young'un to drag along for my Pink Pig adventure ). Now, the Pink Pink is in a tent at the Lenox Macy's at the top of the parking deck facing Lenox Road (at least it was 2 years ago). The line can be long but my wait was enjoyable listing to adults share their Pink Pig stories. I was in line behind a grandma and her gkids all dressed up who drove from Alabama to continue the tradition. The PP is (was) a BIG deal. No more for me though, now that it's Macy's and not Rich's anymore.
