Too old to ski -- where to go for snow-fun?
 

DH and I are too "mature" to take up skiing but would love to go to a mountain resort where we can enjoy being in the snow -- perhaps snowmobile tours, then a roaring fireplace, and -- what else? Also, since we live in the deep south we have no cold weather gear. Where to go? What to do? What kind of clothing? Any place rent clothing? Thanks for any recommendations.

Do you bicycle? If so, you probably could cross-country ski. Look for resorts in Vermont and elsewhere in the Northeast, and in Minnesota for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing; call them to ask if they rent cold weather gear. There is cross-country skiing around the Lake Tahoe area, and usually the temperature is above freezing during the day--storm days are an exception.

I forgot: snowshoeing is another option.

You don't to ski at ski resorts. Areas like Breckenridge, Vail, etc. have a variety of non-sking activities ranging from snowmobiles to sled rides, dog slid rides, plus shopping and eating. Unfortunately you probably need to buy a good winter coat. Snowmobile suits generally come with the snowmobiles. The sleigh rides comes with heavy blankets.

Beaver Creek may be perfect for you depending on your budget of course. Hotels, condos, restaurants, shops surrounded by breath-taking scenery. Expensive, but a wonderful spot. Plenty of activities in the area and Vail a shuttle bus ride away.

Dog sledding is a great time. Mountain Mushers outside of Vail does a real trip- you dog sled out into the woods, have a snack and sled back. Many companies split the trip with a sleigh or something else but Mountain Mushers is all dog sledding and they let you try your hand at "driving". Those little doggies can move!
