Token gifts to bring back
We'll be traveling to Hawaii in February - was wondering what token gifts are a good idea to bring back for a few people - both male and female. These days everyone is so careful with what you travel with, I was wondering if there are any restrictions on fruit, or are there other good ideas? Let me know! Thanks ~

Go by K-Mart or Walmart and pick up a bunch of boxes of chocolate covered macadediam nuts. Coffee from Kona is another popular gift.
|
take some beautiful photos, develop then and and buy cheap frames for them when you get back home. the macadamia nut idea is good too. enjoy!

There are restrictions on fruit. However, you can have some shipped back to the US, but keep in mind, it is expensive. Other places to go for souvenirs are the ABC store and Hilo Hatties. You can find a ton of knick-knacks as gifts.
|
You can get sarongs cheap at Ross.

Also, you may be able to get the chocolate covered macadamia nuts cheaper at the ABC stores or Longs Drugs.

You can also bring back key chains and magnets. They are cheap at ABC stores.
|
Go for the chocolate covered nuts. Personally I would have no interest in getting photos from someone else's vacation, no matter how pretty you think they are.
|
Macadamia coffee, macadeamia nuts, attractive T shirts ( not wild)
|
Coconut Hand and body lotion---yum!!
|
Kona Coffee is a must. I brought some to New York for my cousin's co-worker and she wanted to give me $20 for it!! You can get boxes of chocolate covered mac nuts at ABC or on sale at Longs; for smaller gifts they have individually-wrapped chocolate covered mac nuts for about 50 cents each. There are also individual packs of mac nuts for $1. Hilo Hatties and probably ABC can help you with boxing up pineapple and papaya to take home.

HI, my favorite souvenirs are consumable & while I love the choc mac nuts, you can buy them here & they are just as good. The pineapple in Hawaii is the best & so easy to bring home. Call Dole or whoever ships it for you, order it & it will meet you at the airport, you check it & pick it up from baggage claim when you get home...you can break open the box & distribute the luscious fruit to your friends...I also sent calendars to everyone when I lived there. The Hawaiian perfumes are nice too, but have gotten expensive. The first time we shipped the pineapple, we bought it at HNL airport..it was excellent. In winter white pineapples is available, most mainlanders have never tasted it, so you might check to see if you can get it for shipping.
Have a great trip. Aloha, Linda

Although we haven't been to Hawaii, one of our favorite things to bring home from several countries (Venezuela, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic) is coffee...we go to the local supermarket and load up...we buy beans for the real coffee lovers...and we bring a trash/plastic bag so the smell doesn't doesn't permeate everything.. It's fresher and less expensive than buying at the resort, tourist gift shops or the airport. Last trip we brought back 10 pounds..still have one package in the freezer....lol

I don't drink coffee and manage to always get a lot of unusable gifts. Since most of my friends don't drink it either, I don't even have much use for it in serving guests. I typically unload it on an older relative who drinks the stuff.

I'd much rather get some candy.

Three cheers for mbln's suggestion. I always keep my ears pealed for friends who are going to Hawaii so I can give them money to bring back pineapple for me. There is nothing like it in the 'contingent 48'. Ranks as my #1 idea of a souvenir from this beautiful state!

Just put this on a list for Maggi:
--chocolate covered mac nuts from Costco, ABC Store, or Longs
--Kona Coffee. Don't forget they come flavored, too, so you can buy Chocolate Haupia flavor (my fave), choco mac nut, etc.
--Taro pancake mix, taro english muffins, taro lavosh, etc. Poi itself is funky to people who have not tried it, but as a starch in baked goods, you cannot taste it. It will give the baked goods a purple hue, as the ones I have listed will show you. But it will not have the poi taste, yet still be lowfat and nutritious.
--Maui Brand sugar.
--Hawaiian music CDs
--White honey (found in ABC and Shirokiya at Ala Moana Center). This is really delicious honey but very expensive
--Hula girl pancake mix (Kona coffee choco chip flavor, mango and pineapple flavor, and coconut pineapple flavor) found at Compleat Kitchen in Ala Moana Center. Also kind of expensive but it's unique
--mac nut pasta and other flavored pastas at the Compleat Kitchen, Ala Moana center
How about dashboard hula girls?

I found keychains with the names of my friends and family written in Hawaiian. They seemed to like them. Coffee is a great idea, too. I like to visit the local markets in search of items not available in my area.
|
just got back from oahu-went to the swap meet at aloha stadium-three whole rows of vendors-very cheaper if you name your price, everything for t-shirts to music.
|
Last time I was in Hawaii, I was in search of souvenir snow globes. The sales clerks looked at me like I was crazy.
|
I've been on the receiving end of the chocolate macadiam nuts, coffee and hand lotions and soaps. The soap was the favorite of all, then lotion, then the nuts and lastly the coffee ( not a coffee drinker). But all were lovely, thoughtful gifts and appreciated.
