Today's local TV news
This mornings news out of Ft. Myers had two very interesting pieces.
#1: A boy playing in a tree in Ft. Myers yesterday was on a branch that started to give way. He reached out and grabbed a live power line which sent him to the ground. He was pronounced dead. They are currently investigating to see what could have killed him. Huh? #2: Yesterday a family of five boating off the shores of Pine Island capsized. The father immediately went missing. The teenage boy removed his life jacket and gave it to his mother. The mother and daughter clung together and were eventually rescued. Both the boy and father drowned. A man (apparently a police officer) said they are investigating. The water is only about 10 feet deep so it is very improbable or unlikely that they could have drowned. Huh? Were they 12 feet tall? |

Whether he died from the fall or from electrocuted. The real investigation should center around what the heck was a live wire doing so near to that tree...and why was this kid playing in that tree? That Pine Island one has me stumped. Both very sad stories though. |
The real story is the boy gave up his life jacket to save his sis and mom. As a result he also gave his life.

Yes, no name. It is a very tragic but heroic story.
About the boy in the tree: why was he climbing it? uh, because he's a boy? why were there live power lines near it? Have you ever been to Florida? We lose our power frequently because when the wind gets over about 30 miles per hour, invariably moving branches hit live power lines and blow the transformers. Florida Power and Light has huge crews that spend all their time constantly going around trimming trees that interfere with power lines. |
USCG recommends that there be a life jacket for every person, and if the boat is less than 26 feet long the jackets should be worn at all times. We have had a record number of drownings in the state of Washington this year, and none of the victims wore life jackets.
