I'm sorry to hear about your pooch, Bonnie. I hope he is going to be okay. My older pup developed a swollen spot on his tummy about a year ago, but the vet says it's just a deposit and it's never made him seem to feel ill or eat any less.

Please update us when you have some news.

We have just returned home from the Vet, where Trissie was X-rayed. He is still there, and will have an ultra-sound within the hour. The X-rays were not good ... a huge mass in his abdominal cavity, but we don't know what it is or what organs may be involved. The ultra-sound will give the doctor much more information. We are heartbroken, to say the least.

Yesterday was so bizarre ... Trissie relaxed so much and slept in the afternoon ....... the swollen "spot" on his tummy actually went back down to practically normal by last night, and he slept well overnight. (His entire abdomen was never distended; for that I would have had him at the Emergency Vet in an instant!) But this morning, he was obviously getting uncomfortable again, and we could see the swelling beginning again.

So now we wait for the doctor's call ......... to see where we go from here. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all (and Trissie does, too) who have given me moral support and kind advice since I posted yesterday.

bonniebroad...hoping things are going as well as they can for your pup and you. dogs fill a special place in our hearts and doglovers know how difficult it is to see your pal suffer, or lose your buddy.

Our hearts were so broken last year when we lost our beloved pup of 9 years very suddenly. It's taken 2 puppies to fill the void.

Bonnie, Trissie is so very fortunate to have such a loving and caring mom--all pets should be so lucky. Miss Killer and I are keeping you both in our prayers. {{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}

The sad news is that Trissie has a huge cancerous mass on his spleen, with pockets of blood that could rupture, and he could bleed out any time! The doctor says he has a month at most, as he is. There are no signs of spreading, although the ultrasound would not pick up microscopic spread, so we can't be sure. The only options are to try this major surgery at age 16 -1/2, which *could* save his life, and give him a little more time ....... OR to give him a shot and let him go peacefully.

We are agonizing over this decision this evening. The average lifespan for a Cairn is 14 years, so he has lived a long and wonderful life. I start to cry every time I look at him.........

I wish you had received better news. I was afraid that is what it was. Would you feel better if you talked to someone at NC State to explore all the possibilities? Unfortunately, even with removal you sometimes only get another 6 months with some of these splenic tumors. Know that whatever happens you gave him a wonderful life. If you do have to make the decision to euthanise him it will be one more gift you can give him.

Our family dog was diagnosed with Lymphoma and given the time frame of 1-2 months. He surprised all, including the vet, by giving us 9 more wonderful months with him. When he started to show signs of discomfort and pain, we let him go. It was a terribly difficult thing but he lives vibrantly in our hearts.

My best to you and your family. It's such a difficult thing. My best advice is to have some professional photos taken with you and Trissie, then when she is suffering be at peace knowing you are doing what is best for her. She knows how much you love her! She has been very lucky in life and she owes that to you!

You're in my thoughts.

I'm so so sorry for what your family and Trissie are going through. I've been there and it's a gut-wrenching decision. I've been checking the board all day, hoping for good news. Continued prayers for you all and a huge cyber hug to Trissie.
