tips for san diego-monterey drive?

My husband and I plan to drive from San Diego to Monterey in late-May. We'd like to stay overnight somewhere between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Any suggestions on where to stay (b&b or inn), and/or not-to-miss places, sites, restaurants? Thanks!

Hint: Search for "Morro Bay", "Highway 1", "California Coast Highway", ... you will bring up tons of info.

My wish: People search first and ask questions if they cannot find the answer. The duplicate questions are maddening. Fodor's how about a prominent how-to-use FAQ?

Beatrice,
Ignore the above poster. I'm sorry I can't help you, as I don't have your answers. I just wanted you to know that the majority of people don't feel like the above poster. Post away. There are always nice people willing to help.

Beatrice,

Ignore the policeperson. If he/she doesn't want to answer then he/she doesn't have to! Sheesh, some people are just too uptight for their own good. New postings are by no means "maddening" as Searchfirst comments (how ridiculous!), because they keep the board fresh with responses from newcomers.

As for Morro Bay, try The Inn at Morro Bay. It's located within a state park and is surrounded by lots of open land and water. It's been a while since i've visited, but I think it's a good choice. Hearst Castle is a nice visit, probably should be about 30-35 miles north, they have a selection of tours, but try one of their garden tours since you'll be there in the spring. They also have some great little wineries in the Cambria area you might want to try. Have a great time!
The wacky Madonna Inn is just outside SLO--all rooms are "themed"--some cave rooms with waterfalls, ours was a fox hunt theme. It's fun for one night. Also in SLO is Apple Farm Inn which is a country/Victorian place with a pretty good restaurant (obviously big into apples!)and a gift shop with "country" stuff. If you can time it for Thursday night, there is a wonderful farmers market in SLO with Mexican food and music. There are lots of smaller motels in SLO since it's a college town. We have stayed at the Inn at Morro Bay, which is quite nice. Morro Bay is a bit more interesting than SLO with the big rocks in the bay, little shops to poke around in and some nice seafood restaurants. Another lovely little town is Cambria, just north of Morro Bay by about a half hour where Hearst Castle is, and there any of the places on Moonstone Beach are nice. We stayed twice, once at the J. Patrick B&B in town and once at the Fireplace Inn (Best Western) but also liked the Fogcatcher Inn (on the beach) and Olallieberry Inn (this one's in the town, not on the beach) In Cambria eat at Brambles or the Sows Ear. Lots of great places to stop, but reservations should be made NOW!!!
