Tipping on Amtrak
Hi all. I've posted already about my upcoming Christmas travel on the Lake Shore Ltd. and the Empire Builder. I'm back with a question about tipping. I'll be in a sleeper from Chicago to Seattle and back, and I'd like to know what is the best way to go about tipping the sleeper attendant. Some recommend tipping before to encourage good service, while others customarily tip at the end to reward good service. What do you recommend? Thanks. Also, anyone got any ideas on what's a good tip for a 2-night trip?

I usually tip 50% up front sometimes all of it, just depends on how well my first impression of the attendent is.
If I have a family sleeper I give them $20 a nite. I have had some really good service,Once a Teacher from Chicago who moolighted as a attendent told my children a bedtime story. I think i enjoyed it more than the kids. Needless to say she got extra |
I read somewhere... either on the website, or with the tickets, perhaps? Recommendations for tipping. Can't recall.
Anyway, I tipped the attendant. Also the dining room waitress expects a tip. They are the same people the whole trip, so it's up to you when and how much. |
When we went round trip Seattle-Chicago in a sleeper I didn't tip anybody because the service was in the drawer below the bottom drawer. However, here is a site that may help you: http://www.trainweb.com/travel/tipping.htm

Thanks HAPPYTRAILS! That article helped alot. I think I'm going to go with waiting until after the journey to tip. But at least now I know what constitutes 'good service'!
