Tipping For Wine Service
 

Another thread was started on tipping so I thought I would bring up a related topic: Tipping for Wine Service.

I think we can all agree on the standard tipping for the meal (15%-20%). But what about wine? Let's say I order a very nice bottle. Should one tip 15%-20% of the cost of that bottle? I mean, what additional work went into opening and pouring a $15 bottle vs. a $100 bottle?

I know one could make the argument about what additional work went into a $10 entree vs. a $50 entree. But IMO, it's apples and oranges.

Technically, you tip the sommelier if there is one. Your tip is for the advice you receive on which bottle of wine to order and the opening/pouring of the wine. Some times your server is knowledgable enough about the wine list to make a recommendation and be tipped for the advice. In any case, opening and pouring is a bar service which usually gets 10% - I tip more if I receive good advice.
