Tipping Concierge in NYC

In advance of a four night stay in Manhattan, I have asked the concierge at my hotel to make three dinner reservations for me, and for advice on theater tickets. He has been very helpful indeed. How much should I tip him, and should I do so upon arrival? Fodor's says $5-10, plus extra for extra help, but is that per service, per day...? The hotel is a 3-4 star hotel, with a nightly rate of about $400. I don't want to be cheap, but I've never used a concierge to this degree before. Any advice?

I would tip him $20 sometime during the stay. If you are not planning to make further use of his services, I would tip him early on. If you intend to continue to use his services, tip him near the end of your stay but up the amount to $30-40.
