Tipping at hotels
What do people generally tip at medium to high end hotels for the various services?
If you will do a search above you will find there have been several very comprehensive discussions of tipping in hotels.
They do it out of guilt so they won't look "cheap".
I tend to think hard work is hard work. I don't tip less at 3 star than I would at a 5 star. I don't know can you look at a hard working maid from a third world country and think ...hmmm your not working at the four seasons you get less?
Now if I have to ask for something more than once or if the room is never cleaned properly that is something different. |
so you penalize them because english may be a second language to them?
tip what you feel is necessary. there will always be people who have tipped more and people who have tipped less, so unless you have to rely on them in the future or you have legitimate fears of your name showing up in page six, do what you feel is best. |
Anyone know what bradk was talking about in the beginning of his message?
well i'm glad you care enough to ask :) sarah's comment about tipping maids from the 3rd world less because she has to ask twice.
bradk - Except that if you read Sarah's response again, you'll see that's not at all what she said...
i combined the two statements, very logically i think. she suggests that hotels of all stature employ maids from third world nations and also says she sometimes has to ask more than once and that demands a lower tip. I was just assuming that maids from most 3rd world nations don't speak english natively. my mistake. sorry.
Thanks for clearing that up (I think).
Wasn't trying to get on your case either, Bradk :) Just another example of how posts can "read" differently, I guess (especially when fast skimming.) I saw the second part as a completely unrelated "service" issue. But I can see where you linked the two...

I am usually not asking maids directly bradk but the front desk, no language problems there. I also don't find most maids with out any English we do usually chat if they are in my room at some point.
I was speaking to one incident in particular where the maid was sent to me when I was in the room. I had just checked in to room not quite ready. She swept a filthy bathroom floor all behind the door and then when you closed it there was the dirt (not my dirt). Funny, she also had no language problem and denied the work when her supervisor brought her up to confront problem. I switched rooms and floors and maids :):). That was a Hilton in D.C just a few blocks from the whitehouse. Think that was a 4 star property. |
no worries. i was pretty much intentionally being a smartass about it anyway. consequently, i don't believe in penalizing during tips anyway. altho i was fond of the scene in Made where Vince Vaughn's character lays down a stack of dollar bills at the restaurant and explains to the server that it's his tip and for every minute vince is kept waiting, it costs a dollar in tips.

I knows that this kind of a thread can pull the smart asses out of the wood work :):):)....no offense taken
