Tipping

We've been told to give our guide $10-20 a day. They didn't say want to do for the driver. All other help put in $5-10 a day per person. How do these rates sound?

kaudrey Jun 15th, 2006 05:40 AM

Where are you going?

nkd Jun 15th, 2006 05:41 AM

Huh?
This is the most vague title and unclear post of the day

JAGIRL Jun 15th, 2006 05:45 AM

I would refer you to the "Tipping the pilot' post.
It has information on every possible type of tipping almost in every single country.
You may find it here :

We like to tip the First Officer and Captain with booze.

rb_travelerxATyahoo Jun 15th, 2006 06:13 AM

I thought this was about tipping cows.

We'll be traveing in rural areas this summer.

JAGIRL Jun 15th, 2006 07:28 AM

Maybe someone should start a post :
How to tip cows :))
Now that would be a funny one! :)

betharwein Jun 15th, 2006 03:41 PM

True, my request was not only vague but didn't say much of anything but then again while a few of you like to be insulting I've got to tell you some of your jokes and joshing back and forth is pretty boring and ruins the value of the post.

JAGIRL Jun 15th, 2006 03:45 PM

and what, may I ask, was the value of the post? :?

escargot Jun 15th, 2006 04:07 PM

Betharwein - please don't be so thin skinned - really no one was insulting - they were adding some comic relief which is often good for the soul !
So you posted a vague post w/out a clear title and a few fodorites had some fun - come on, you didn't smile once??? Smiling makes my day, if you took away the humor and 'joshing back and forth' from fodorites, then that would make it all very boring sometimes indeed !

Think of posting "duh....would have been nice if I'd included some more info...was in a rush today with all the trip planning....meant tipping related to blah , blah blah and likely you'd get lots of good info !!

Smile - life's too short not to laugh.

Now, cow tipping....hmmm....when working in Appalachia, well all I can say is watch out for the electrified fences and the owners with shotguns !

bill_boy Jun 15th, 2006 04:10 PM

Topping.

happytrailstoyou Jun 15th, 2006 04:16 PM

Bethar,

I Couldn't agree more about the joshing.

However, it is unclear what kind of a guide you are tipping and how long he/she will be at your service. If you are on a two-week tour with a bus load of 35 other travelers, $10-$20 would be excessive. However, if the tip is for a family of four being driven around in a limousine for two days--the tip may be too small.

More information about the circumstances would help us give you a helpful answer and it would leave you less open to being the recipient of a lot of guff.

Y'all better leave MY cows alone!

escargot Jun 16th, 2006 05:49 AM

Betharwein: Here's the thing. Fodorites are a great group, some like to josh, joke and some right to the point - all in good fun.

However, many who have been around for a long time, and I learned this when I was new to this board myself, really appreciate it if new posters read all the instructions and helpful hints when they join so the old posters don't have to go over and over the same rules and answer the same questions over and over again.

For instance, in your other post about tipping posted on the European board later in the day, you did it much better with your heading reading "Tipping-Kenya, Africa" and the post gave all the particular information.

Also, you asked in another post 'how do I respond to a message' - and someone graciously explained it to you. Quite honestly, another fodortie might have graciously explained, but also thought (wisely) to direct you to read all the info about how to use the board before you start posting -

http://fodors.com/forums/faqs.cfm

Some people are more patient than others, but if you become a frequent user of the board, you will see that it can become frustrating for some to have to answer the same questions - when the answer is already here by searching in forum or on the link I gave you above.

HOWEVER, in defense of you and others, I will say I think Fodors could do a better job when people register of making reading the FAQ"S a more significant part of the registration - like maybe having people read it before they can even register.

Anyway, have a nice day and I see you received your tipping answer on your post and have fun in Kenya !

escargot Jun 16th, 2006 05:50 AM

oops, above I meant your post on the "africa board" not european... :)

JAGIRL Jun 16th, 2006 06:31 AM

betharwein,
Sorry for the joshing. Sometimes we just cannot help ourselves.
We promise to give really good answers if you just post more information.
