A guidline to consider when you're not sure when to tip, is to tip when you ask a staff member to do something (or provide a service requiring special attention). It might be 'get me a cab', or bring me extra towels above what the place is supposed to give me, etc, or like a previous poster said, tipping the concierge to track down a table at a restaurant might get him/her a tip, but not to hand you a map. A bathroom attendant just needs a polite 'no thank you' if you don't want to tip, you can still grab your own towel without hurting his/her feelings.

I agree with the 15% rule for cabs & waitstaff (including bartenders) more of course if exceptional service. $1 to the doorman for hailing a cab or the valet for parking your car.

As for restroom attendants, I've run into many in the US, so I wouldn't say they are only in Atlantic City. I tip 25 -50 cents a trip. I really don't find this to be a problem, many of these people would not have a job otherwise and I think it's great that they are willing to do whatever it takes to make a living. Let's face it, how many of us would feel comfortable in their shoes?

I don't feel comfortable having them hear me do my business and awaiting my exit.

Aussie, I am a NY'er and forget about the bathroom round table here, attendants are around but not everywhere. Heck, you can find one at the bar across the street from Yankee stadium.

For restaurants tip 15%-20% (depending upon serivce. Just like any other major city. For bars, do as everyone elsesaids run a tab, and then leave 15%, or a few $$ if pay for a round w/ cash.

As for cabs 15% is fine. Have a great trip.

In NYC doubling the tax makes it easy to leave the tip.
