Tioga Road progress

From Yosemite website :

Plowing Update

Tioga road progress - May 2, 2006 Plowing operations have reached Big Meadow Overlook. The snow depth is now 7 feet with very dense snow. We have run in to 8 buried trees, some over 24 inches in diameter, that had to be removed so plowing could continue. Our hope is to reach South Fork by Thursday.

I'm still holding out some hope that the road will be open by June 3rd. I will travelling from Reno to Vegas down 395 and wanted to see Yosemite for the first time on that day without having to go all the way around. I'm not sure where Big Meadow Overlook is but based on this limited progress so far and past history is there any hope that it will be open for Saturday June 3rd ?? (4 1/2 weeks from now)

I won't have time to go the long way around and back so if Tioga Road is not open then I won't be able to see Yosemite at all. Based on all the snow there this year I've pretty much made alternate plans and given myself an extra day in southern Utah instead but I'm still leaving open the small possibility that it will be open in time.

Going to Yosemite this Friday, has anyone been on the trail to Nevada/Vernal Falls?

dancingmichelle1,

I've done hiked the Mist trail to the top of Vernal Falls several times. Never went as far as the Nevada Falls. If you hike the Mist trail take a rain slick! The mist from Vernal Falls will get you WET! If there is any breeze you will get soaked! Nice hike. The last part is pretty intense hiking up wet steps.

there's always hope, vancouver guy.

dancingmichelle1: I've done the panorama trail (which takes you from the valley floor all the way up to Glacier Point (passing Necada and Vernal) but it was during the summer. What did you want to know? If it's conditions, you can always go to nps.gov but if you have other questions I can ask other than condition, ask away.

vancouver_guy: Good luck. But I wouldn't count on it being nearly ready to open in less than a month.

We've been having warm weather for the last week. That might seem like a good thing - but it actually isn't. W/ cold weather and no new snow they can clear the road fairly quickly. But when it warms up there is waaaaay too much danger of subsidence and avalanches. So the work goes a lot slower.

Your best hope is we get a cold spell (but no new storms).
