I have two friends who have what I'd guess are "top of the line" places and they use them. One in particular really works the system of trading time, etc. The other is in St. John's and they have great times with family vacations. But I KNOW this is not the norm--and don't forget, you have to spend the money to GET to the place.
DS bought one, with my eyes rolling back in my head, and has regretted it ever since. Have no idea if they still have it.

A timeshare is definitely not a good investment, but I wouldn't say buying one is never a good idea. Those are two different concepts. It might be a good idea even if it isn't a good investment. (yes, we own two weeks at a Marriott)
