Hi,

We are staying at the Hilton Doubletree suites on Broadway at 47th street. They have a fridge, microwave etc and I was wondering if anyone knew of some delis or food shops within a few blocks we could pick up a few things for breakfast and snacks. Any suggestions of a diner or cafe that does a nice breakfast close by? Also any nice restaurants in the area? Prefer mid priced ones as the exchange rate with the Aussie dollar has gone into free fall.

All you are looking for will be just around every corner in the area. There are delis on almost every corner, and if not then a Duane Reade, (pharmacy, snacks, and anything else you need).

Restaurant Row is also close by and every building there has a restaurant.

You don't mention how long you are going to be here, but I'd suggest picking up a Zagat Guide which is all the restaurants in Manhattan, pretty much. That way you can pick a restaurant whereever you find yourself in the city.

If you want to hit a local grocery store there are a couple in the area on 8th Ave Food Emporium (50th and 8th) and D'Agostino (52nd and 8th)

For delis there are local shops everywhere or for famous delis walk up 7th to the Carnegie Deli (HUGE sandwiches there).

Re restaurants: Agree that Restaurant Row - 46th has many restaurants; however there are a plethora of more inexpensive ones on 9th avenue.

I recently ate at La Kabbr, a Middle Eastern restaurant on Ninth around 47th, I think. It was not expensive and I thought quite good.

Definitely head over to Ninth Avenue and you will find many places to eat that are not touristy, but of the neighborhood.

The Brooklyn Diner on 43rd St. is very good, if a little on the high $$ side for a diner. Outstanding macaroni and cheese. I really think it's the best I've ever had ( but that should be tempered by the fact that we had just arrived from San Francisco and were extremely hungry!

No helpful info here, just wanted to say that we were very happy with that hotel when we stayed in June of '07. Everything seemed to have been just freshly painted and the whole place was wonderfully clean and well-maintained. It was a great location for exploring New York.

Now that I think about it, there was an Irish bar with an attached restuarant just around the corner. While I do not know if the food is good, the prices looked reasonable and the atmosphere was lively and pleasant.
