Times Sq. Wine Store ?
 

I have a party of 14 southern women coming to NYC soon and will need some wine for the room. Where should I go for reasonable prices, OK selection, and even snacks? We'll be in Times Sq. and I need a place close by.

Although I appreciate good wine, a limited selection will do.

A great (but a bit pricy ) wine store.
Wine stores in NYC can only sell wine. Snacks are sold in grocery/delis/supermarkets, which can sell beer, but not wine.

Closer will be the wine store Manhattan Plaza Winery, which is at 589 9th Ave between 42nd and 43rd St. perfectly fine wine store.

For a fun trip to find some good wines, head downtown to just south of Union Square (14th and Park AVe)

Union Square Wine, is my FAVORITE wine store in the city, lots of choices and if you buy some wine, you can get some tastings at their wine bar.

Also the Wine Warehouse on Broadway and Astor Place is GREAT, LOTS of selection and great prices.

The other recommendation is Astor Place Wine just south of Astor Place on Lafayette.

Not sure where your hotel is ... Times Square hotels can be anywhere from 42nd Street to 56th Street, which is a fairly large area.

In addition to the places reommended below, there's a liquor store on Broadway between 56th and 57th (east side of the street). I don't know the name, unfortunately.

I think you'll find Morrell's way too expensive and Astor way too inconvenient, but I agree with Travelbuff that Astor and Wine Warehouse are some of the best in the city, as is Trader Joes on 14th near Union Square.

In addition to the ubiquitous Duane Reade drug stores (very good choices actually for snack foods, water, and sodas), there are large grocery stores near Times Square on 8th and 9th Avenues (search on the web sites for Food Emporium and Gristede's in the 10019 zip code). You'll find several liquor and wine stores in the 40s and 50s on 8th and 9th avenues. You might want to just ask your hotel where the closest one is. The area west of Times Square is almost entirely residential, so it has a lot of stuff within 10 minutes walk, and it's a safe area to walk in at all times of the day and night.

One of the best and reasonably priced wine stores in the city is an import from Philly-Moore Bros. they keep the store "refrigerated."

A hole in the wall with knowledgable people and aisles that are impassable is Crossroads on 14th off 6th Avenue.

Inside Chelsea market is a wine store that is pretty good.

Otherwise we agree with the previous posters:

Astor-great selection, easy to shop

Warehouse-exactly that-good selection of cheaper wines

Fodors folks have NEVER let me down. We'll be at the Double Tree Suites TSQ. I'm going to map all these choices, look up $, etc. Delivery is a good idea too. I'm spoiled by good store prices (Total Wine) and wish to avoid $18 glasses of wine at The View, or similar...

I can't be specific, but there are several great smallish neighborhood wine stores along 9th Avenue in the mid 40's. I was really impressed with some wonderful inexpensive and fairly obscure Southern Italy, Sicilian, and Sardinian selections at a place on 9th about 47th or 48th on the east side of the street.

Probably not the place to go if you want a $150 bottle of wine or greater --which you will find at Morell's. But a great selection of super inexpensive to moderate ones.

If it is still open, there is a liquor store on 9th and 42nd called the Manhattan Plaza wine. I used to pass by on the bus. I assume it is still there.

I'm sure they deliver. Everyone in NYC delivers.

What's the food place at Grand Central? That's where I would provision up for a cocktail party, although you will pay a pretty penny. I just adore browsing thru the different purveyors, falling in love with the fish or the cheese.

I would get the wine delivered from wherever, and then for very specialty items head to Grand Central. Otherwise the nearest Food Emporium is the neighborhood grocer with anything you will need.

By the way, almost across the street closer to 49th is the Amish Market -- fantastic for prepared foods, party supplies, and cheeses.

Between those two places one could provision a grande party, eh Neo?! Amy's and the Amish Market would fit sweet, savoury....

Yes, and you could throw in that great little wine store I mentioned also in the same couple of blocks, for the full deal!

Here are two other places. One is the Little Pie Company with locations on West 43rd and Grand Central. Although expensive, the sour cream walnut apple, as one cop friend said, is more addictive than crack.

The other is Sullivan Street Bread.
Arguably the best bread in the city. The partners split and that is why Sullivan Street Bread is on 47 Street. It is served at many of the best restaurants in the city and its hard crust and airy interior are recognizable.

Wow! I have been to the food market in Grand Central several times. There is SO much great food to be found here!

I did notice the weird law about wine vs. liquor. However, SC is just as odd. Wine & beer together, liquor entrance separate. We could not even buy wine & beer on Sundays until this year.
