Tide Pools at La Jolla

I have read about them and would like to go there but where exactly are they and is there a "best" time of day to go?

We are in San Diego until Sunday morning.

Thanks.

The tidepools you want are in Pt. Loma near the Cabrillo Lighthouse. From downtown go Harbor Dr. to a left on Rosecrans, Right on Canon, and left on Catalina Bl to the end. You'll come to a fork where left will go the (old)lighthouse and right will go down to the tidepools and new lighthouse.

You'll want to go as close to low tide as possible which varies with usually 2 low tides a day. Times are published all over including the local weather section of the paper or you could find many sources on the net inluding the national weather service. however sites like this...

http://wavecast.net/4daytides.shtml might be easier to read.

While malvados instructions are good, those are not the La Jolla tide pools, but are the lighthouse or Point loma tide pools.
The ones in la Jolla are near the cove, but to be honest,, I haven't been in year and forget!
Just follow the signs to la Jolla Cove and ask someone to point you toward the nearby tide pool.

i realized i was giving directions to pt. loma and not la jolla because pt.loma's are the better and more well known ones.

Thanks

Actually Pt Loma works better since we are staying in Humphrey's right off Rosencranz

You're just a hop, skip and a jump, from there. Take Shelter Island Dr. (where Humphrey's is located) to Rosecrans and hang a left and follow my other directions.

Your concierge will probably have an easy map for you as it's probably a frequent recommendation.

If possible (tides permitting - remember low) go towards the middle of the day to avoid the marine layer in the morning and possibly in the afternoon. The view from there is one of the best of the city.
