Thrift Shops and San Francisco
 

I am always on the hunt for interesting thrift shops (not consignment shops). Can anyone recommend any in San Francisco? It could be for clothes or household items. But they need to be in town because I won't have a car. Thanks.

I'm not sure if these will fit the bill, but Haight Street (yes that Haight Street) has numerous vintage and recycled clothing stores.

Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights has the same...

There are also good Thrift selections in the Mission district.

Haight has several good resale shops, and a better than average Goodwill Store.

Goodwill also has a 'boutique' store on a street called West Portal. It's accessable on the MUNI street car K line.

Every hotel room has a phone book. Check out Yellow pages for "second hand shopping". There is a flee market on Treasure Island on Sunday morning, and a Muni bus goes there from Mission @1st bus terminal.

Just wanted to second SAB's vote for Haight Street. Can't remember the names of any specific shops, but I found some fantastic clothes at several places there last summer. Some of the best vintage clothing I've ever found!

Nice to know that I live 3 blocks from a marginal part of town, aka Haight Street, I guess that's why the house across the street only sold for 1.6 million dollars. All sarcasm aside, the Haight during the day and particularly on weekends is full of visitors. Are there people hanging around attempting to recreate the '60's --yes, does the Haight have more than its' fair share of street people (I refuse to call them homeless)--yes; would I wander around late at night--no, but it is not unsafe during the day to go shopping.

Haight Street is the way to go--they have tons. Just to warn you--in true Haight Street style some are very $$$. They also have some neat botiques to shop in. The mission (Valecnia St and Mission street) both have tons of clothing stores--again these range from very pricey to clothes by the pound.
