Three nights between Glacier and Yellowstone
We leave Glacier from St. Mary and have three nights to fill before our arrival at Yellowstone. I would like to take the Beartooth Highway into the YSNP preferably in the morning. I am looking for suggestions for a place to spend those nights. I am new to this part of our country and would appreciate your help. Travel is in late August. Thanks!

Beartooth Highway is spectacular, consider spending the night prior in Red Lodge. Never stayed there, but cute town we’ve driven through.
Assuming you would have done GTTS road in Glacier already consider driving up to Waterton Lakes after St. Mary and staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel. There are nice hikes nearby and boat trip down to Goat Haunt ranger station. Nice little town as well to explore. |
Thanks Dave. That is an awesome suggestion. The setting of the hotel is gorgeous. Do you think driving from there to Red Lodge is doable in one day? Google maps says about eight hours.

Our plan is currently to stay two nights at Apgar Village Lodge, one night at Many Glacier Hotel, two nights at Prince of Wales, one night at Red Lodge and 4 nights at Canyon Lodge. We fly into Missoula and out of Bozeman.
Thanks for the Waterton Lakes idea! |
The highlights of Glacier are on the eastern slope, the west side (Apgar) is kind of an “also ran” area. So I’d add 2 nights to Manyglacier and daytrip from there to Waterton Lakes, maybe have tea there. There’s not a lot to do there other than sit and admire the view. If you sleep in Red Lodge you’ll be early into Yellowstone so take advantage of seeing the Lamar Valley and that corner of the park so you don’t have to backtrack. |
Thanks tom_mn. Right now lodging in Glacier seems to be in short supply for our dates. I feel lucky to have gotten the night at the Many Glacier Hotel that I did. I will check periodically over the months to see if I can pick up a night or two at Many Glacier Hotel or Swiftcurrent Motel. Our intention was to leave Red Lodge early so we have lots of time to explore that area as you suggest. Thanks again.
