Thoughts on RV'ing in Winter

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions/feedback/advice about RV ing around the US in Winter.

My family and I (three young children under 6) expect to fly into San Fanacisco or LA in December and buy an RV and take 3-6 months to discover America. So we start in the west and slowly make our way east/south.

Would love to visit the snow during this period as well but would love some advice as to whether RV ing during winter is good/bad/ugly.

Thanks in advance.

Ed

Hi Ed..
How cool is that what you are doing..

RV sales is big in Yuma and Phoenix during the winter months..La Mesa RV seems to be one of the big players.
www.lamesarv.com

LAX will be probably be the cheapest airfare..
Snow will be great in Tahoe from SFO or LAX you can do Big Bear.

My sister and brother in-law rented an RV with 2 young boys at age 3 & 6 and they both said how it was the perfect vehicle..the bathroom situation she said was the most happiest for all..
Give us more stuff to work with and will make your road trip a blast!

I also suggest spending some time on www.rv.net/forum.

One thing to be sure to check for is whether the RV you are going to buy is designed for winter use. Not all are and it can get very expensive if you freeze your water pipes and holding tanks. If they are close to full, they will not only freeze but burst.

That, by the way, is the voice of sad experience.

I can't believe that you've closed applications before I replied.I am totally zealous but please just watch for snow and ice. If you have not personally witnessed winter, please know that the NE above DC can be totally undriveable for weeks at a time between mid December & March or it can be beautiful and you will have the open attractions to yourself. In any case try to stay go no further north than Charlottesville and Williamsburg, VA.

Most rvers head south for the winter. My biggest concern would be the freezing of stuff in the pipes and lines - things you will want to flush out of said pipes and lines!

Actually, the area *around* Washington DC is easly paralyzed by snow. Farther north, the natives are equipped to deal with it and rarely are the major roads not bare within 24 hours after the snow stops falling.

Nevertheless, I want to repeat the warnings above, that most RVs' plumbing systems are not designed to tolerate freezing weather. Given your dates and plans, you can stay far enough south to avoid freezing.

RV plumbing systems can be "winterized" and then owners stay in campgrounds that have bathhouses they can use instead of the RV plumbing. This is not much fun, but a lot better than tenting and a risk-free way to enjoy snowy places.

The RV-oriented discussion boards such as those at rv.net have plenty of advice about travel routes, choosing campgrounds, and dealing with wintry weather.

No suggestions, but for a price, I'll send/sell you my really great shirt that I conned off a guy at a RV park last year that shows a Airstream trailier and says "what happens in the trailer park stays in the trailer park."

p.s. what's the diference between a Texas hurricaine and a Tennesee divorce???
Answer: Either way, somebody is going to lose a trailer.
