This Sunday eve show in NYC?
 

Hi--we booked our train tickets to NYC for early Sunday afternoon not realizing that most shows on Sundays are matinees. Any suggestions for dinner and show for this Sunday evening (5/21)? Also, suggestions for a nice breakfast/brunch the next day? Thanks!

Shows that have Sunday evening performances are Avenue Q, Beauty & The Beast, Chicago, Mamma Mia, Lion King. Without knowing anything about you or who you're traveling with it's impossible to make a recommendation. All of these except Lion King would probably be available at the TKTS booth (if you arrive in time) or with a discount on broadwaybox.com

There are also a lot of off Broadway shows that do a Sunday night show. Lots of good word of mouth on Altar Boyz, an off Broadway that should have a performance. Look on playbill.com

Where are you staying (for breakfast reco)?

I went to Playbill.com and clicked on a couple of shows. The second one I chose - Rent - has a 7pm show. Try it to find a show you may be interested in.

Spelling Bee is another with a Sun. night performance.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. We are staying at Radio City near Times Square. By far the most affordabable option--even using Priceline and hotwire.

Have seen most of the ones you are mentioning (all except Beauty and the Beast). I LOVED Wicked and Mamma Mia. Don't want to put down anyone's favorite show, but, hated Avenue Q last year (all that profanity was really distracting and squirmed in my seat for my church-going friend that I had convinced to go with me), and was not thrilled with Lion King (poor value for the money). Hubbie liked the dancing in Chicago but I was not overwhelmed.

I did find Barefoot in the Park, Slava's Snowshow, and I Love you, your perfect now change also has shows on Sunday night. Suggestions?

I don't mean to sound sarcastic or rude, but based on your comments on the shows you've seen, I frankly don't know what to recommend!

Perhaps my friend and I are among the few who did not enjoy Avenue Q?

I do like many musicals and comedies--I have enjoyed Wicked, Mamma Mia, Woman in White, Phantom of the Opera, Annie get your gun etc.

Lion King was over $100 per person for nosebleed seats which frankly is a lot of money to pay.

If no suggestions for a show, then perhaps a suggestion of where to eat (preferably not a chain)?

Based on other shows you've enjoyed, perhaps you'd like Hairspray? It has a 6:30pm show, and is great fun. There is a discount code currently available on BroadwayBox.com for $60 seats- a steal! I looked on Ticketmaster.com and there are discounted seats available for Sunday's performance, so that would get my vote!

What about Jacques Brel or Altar Boyz?

Thanks for the replies. Have booked Alta Boyz at $35 each (seems like a fun show and definitely a good price). Will hit the 9th avenue food festival also.

Where to eat? The wonderful but reasonable Roberto Passon is on the corner of 9th and 50th, half a block from Altar Boyz. In fact, we'll be eating there tonight after Spelling Bee. The Ninth Avenue food festival will have broken down by then.
