I don't understand why anyone would &quot;leave&quot; or &quot;run away&quot;. So what if you had to register. There are so many sites to set up email accounts that you are still totally anonymous.<BR>Or am I missing something?

EdnaB Feb 4th, 2003 07:49 PM

jor, I'm so glad you found a new website that is so much better than this one. Now could you tell me why you were still here all afternoon? And this evening you did at least 5 posts spread out over an hour on this and the Europe boards. For a site you hate so much and find a total waste of your time, you certainly do spend a lot of time here. If the other site is so wonderful, why aren't you there instead of here?<BR><BR>And thank, you, by the way. Of all those posts which were mainly nothing but whining complaints, I did in fact find one that was a true travel post. Congratulations.

I don't think this board will die. There may not be as many posters right now, but for the most part, those that are posting are giving relevant and helpful info. I am so glad to see that the negativity is gone. And, while I believe that some have had difficulty in registering and posting, my experience has been quite easy. Thanks, Fodors. There will always be glitches from time to time, but I think we will see vast improvement.

It seems like the pace is picking up. <BR><BR>I was ready to leave BEFORE registration. Now, I'm staying.

MrAmerica Feb 4th, 2003 10:11 PM

I never had a problem registering or posting at any time. I do miss the funny posts that used to be here <BR>though:(<BR><BR>Above a person wrote &lt;In many countries that peoles ask about modem connections are not like in Europe/USA, I run on a 28k connection! Imagine that.&gt; Now that is a laugh to me as I'm most definately in the USA and have never had anything faster than the 28 modem I have right now. 4 years ago I had a 14k AOL connection as that was the only local number. BTW I find the AOL travel boards the best anywhere but don't want to pay lots of extra money for AOL, which doesn't have a local access # where I live now. They're losing a ton of money a year and customers and one reason is that there are many, many places in the USA where AOL doesn't bother to have a local phone access and no one wants to pay long distance for internet connections.

The first time I tried posting after I registered my password didn't work. Now it seems to be ok. I'm sure in a week or two things will pick up and be back to normal.

My post (Pittsburg) just worked on the first attempt! Yeahhh!!!!<BR><BR>{Maybe there WILL be life after registration... it has just been so darn frustrating.}<BR><BR>Happy Trails!

I think it's funny how craven and lily-livered all the inflammatory posters turned out to be once they were required to pick a permanent screen name. I also don't get it--the screen name is still an alias, and I think the worst that would happen in response to an expletive-filled post is a nasty gram via e-mail from Fodor's. Not that I want all those expletives back! But I do miss the free-wheeling nature of some of the threads, and I wish everyone would loosen up and stop worrying about Fodor's looking over our shoulders. (And thank jiminy the tech problems seem to be abating...)

al Feb 5th, 2003 07:35 AM

This site will not die -- there are enough travel agents and self-absorbed ex-yuppies out there who love talking about themselves and their trips to keep it going. However, the days of intelligent, creative and free-thinking solutions to travel issues are over. <BR><BR>Fodors will live, but will be as dull as dishwater. The road to Hana, anyone?

Jed Feb 5th, 2003 07:53 AM

al - &quot;talking about... their trips&quot; and the ability to answer questions because they have been there is what this board is about. <BR><BR>We have traded less posts and offensive writing for more civility.<BR><BR>

ALF Feb 5th, 2003 09:45 AM

Does anyone else see any irony in a topic titled, &quot; This Message Board will Die...&quot;, followed by 30 messages posted in 24 hours?

Patrick Feb 5th, 2003 09:49 AM

Yes, I think it's very funny as well as ironic. Almost as funny as Edna counting up the number of times a poster has listed his statement about how he's found a much better site and is never coming back, and pointing out how much time he is still spending here.

kychris Feb 5th, 2003 09:49 AM

It's like ray-ay-in on your wedding day....<BR><BR>(Which, by the way, is not in itself ironic ...all apologies to Alanis)

Hey, <BR><BR>If a Fodors post falls off into cyberspace, does it make a sound? Does it make a click

Marie Feb 5th, 2003 10:48 AM

I just returned from giving a speech for almost 50 people on travel research. The Fodors website was my top recommendation - which definitely wouldn't have happened before registration. Will this site die? I highly doubt it.

Tansy Feb 5th, 2003 11:12 AM

Gosh, 50 whole people? That'll save this site for SURE! <BR><BR>

lenleigh Feb 5th, 2003 10:36 PM

After reading Al's comments you would think it was the end of the world. No more &quot;intelligent, creative and free-thinking solutions to travel issues&quot;. So you are saying it was that way prior TO registration??? Lighten up. <BR>

LN Feb 6th, 2003 06:58 AM

This has turned into a really &quot;NICE&quot; site. No more trolls, or accusations. There's been a couple gliches when it first came up but they'll work out cause most programming does. It seems that when a question is asked - now the question is answered - in a positive manner - Thanks Fodors - I like this...

Patrick Feb 6th, 2003 07:05 AM

Part of the reason it is becoming a &quot;nicer&quot; site is that I have noticed the editors quickly deleting nasty posts. Yes, there have been some and it seems they disappear within hours or even minutes of being posted. At the same time, I suspect they are blocking further posts from those who post rude or nasty comments, because the next time I see a post from them, they have changed their screen name. Maybe if they get blocked often enough and have to keep changing registration, they will eventually see that it isn't worth all that effort to just come on here to be rude.

Turtle1 Feb 6th, 2003 07:13 AM

We threw out the baby with the bath water! Not only is the &quot;rudeness&quot; gone but so is the levity, the humour, the intelligent wit &amp; repartee...all of the characteristics that, in my view, made this site a welcome reprieve, a fun place to pop into at some point throughout the day.
