Albuquerque. You are correct in your assumptions... I know alot of people who move here but the NM they envision does not compare to reality!

Baaaa!. Albuquerque is one of the best kept secrets in the United States! And I am not the only person who thinks so... Experts say the following:
1. Forbe's rated Albuquerque the #1 city in the United States to start a new business in 2006.
2. Kiplinger's rated Albuquerque the #3 city in the United States to start a new career in 2006.
3. Biz Journal rated Albuquerque the #10 SMARTEST cities in the United States in 2006!

Why live in Albuquerque?

According to the US census (2006 est)the Metro ABQ area has 803,000 residents, but traffic jams are a rarity. Additionally, the city is adding both light rail and computer rail to its public transportation system.

The Albuquerque climate is half a Denver Co climate and half a Phoenix Az climate. It situated at the northern tip of the Chihuahuan desert at a mile above sea level. It has dry cool winters and dry warm summers. It is seldon hot or cold.

Sunport International airport in ABQ provides non-stop service to 30 North American cities.

World class snow skiing is availble at six ski areas near Albuquerque.

The worlds longest tramway glides up the Sandia Mtns on the eastern edge of ABQ. The Sandia Mtns also have many outdoor activities.

The Rio Grande Bio Park has a great zoo, Aquarium and botanical garden.

The Disney Center at the National Hispanic cultural center provides fine cultural productions from the New Mexico Symphnoy Orchestra, Albuquerque Phiharmonic and other groups.

Numerous other venues provide contemporary productions ... for example the Journal Pavillion.

Old Albuquerque, Corrales and the Nob Hill distrct are several of the areas that offer fine dining and shopping experiences.

I could continue .... well Albuquerque is a great place to raise children or move to in retirement!!

Good post Dave! I'm with you. I've been to ABQ, Santa Fe & Taos many times and I want to move somewhere out there someday. Yes, I'm aware there is crime, poverty, etc., but I'm currently 2 hours away from Detroit! It doesn't get much worse than that.

Northern New Mexico is a beautiful place with much to do in the way of cultural events, good restaurants, outdoor activities, etc.

To each his own though - I suppose it's not for everyone. Sorry to hear you don't like it Travelina.

We spent a day/night in Ruidoso and thought it was a place worth considering for a second home/eventual retirement home. I have done no other research, but it was interesting to see it pop up in a few of the posts here.
