Thanks for the explanation vegasnative. It sounds like xeriscaping is the way to go in Vegas. Obviously the desert wasn't made to support a green lawn.

I pay about 40 bucks water bill during summer. I ripped out the pvc piping and installed the 1/4" tubes for my desert landscaping and trees. It works like a charm and I only water at night. During the 115 degree spell we lost a couple of young plants.

This business of not being able to raise kids properly in Las Vegas is a lot of bunk. Our Las Vegas kids are as good or better than kids anywhere in the USA.

stjohnbound,
YES you are so right, it is better to xeroscape your yard here...we have installed the artificial grass out front, but I don't care for it. One of my nieghbors did the xersocape and it is really pretty.
Also, I have to second what IamBooth said about raising kids here...it really isn't as bad as what seem think, I was born and raised here and am nowing raising 3 kids of my own. We have everything here that other towns/cities have to offer...we do have churchs (not wedding chapels on the Strip..real churchs), we have great schools, boy scouts/girl scouts...yes we get all that here as well. We have the lake for summer water sports, Mt. Charleston for winter activities and tons of sports activities for kids. I have twins that just turned 4 and they are in t-ball and love it! Now, I have a cousin that was raised 2 hours from here in St. George Utah that got messed up in drugs real bad...so you see it really is what you as parents make of it! Gotta go now, the twins have to get to their blackjack lesson....JUST JOKING!!!!

I have to agree with you about having an artificial lawn - that sounds really strange! At least you don't have to mow it! The person we just bought our house from here in Austin was promoted and moved to Las Vegas. She said it's a great place and she really loves living there. I'm sure she doesn't miss all the leaves here in her old yard.

Wow VegasNative, that water bill is amazing! My sewer bill arrives quarterly and is not part of the water bill, but it works out to the exact amount you are paying.

As far as the water, my bill hasn't come yet and I don't save them, so I can't be sure what the per gallon rate is, but I know that we use betwenn 10,000 and 13,000 gallons per month.

I went back through my online bill pay and found that my water bills range from $28.00 to $47.00 in general.

So now I'm wondering why there is such a difference between Henderson's water bill and the Las Vegas Valley Water District water bills.

Just so you know, I live on Warm Springs near Eastern, just two miles west of the Henderson border (Pecos).

Can you shed any light? It seems like that would be an important consideration for someone who is moving to the valley. (It would be for me.)

As far as my electric, mine may be higher than yours because my heat is electric and not gas.

Ya your electric would be more than mine in the winter than because we heat by gas. I was thinking that perhaps we use more water, there are 5 of us in my household. 2 adults, 3 kids, but with the kids I do alot of laundry and run the dishwasher alot as well. In the summer the kids run through the sprinklers and we have a couple of water toys that hook up to the sprinklers, so when you get into those 3rd and 4th tiers it is SO expensive...the city's way of trying to get you to conserve...hit ya in the wallet. Last month we used about 15000 gallons of water. We figured it out, we would actually conserve water and save our pocketbooks by putting in a pool...that is also the reason why Wynn was allowed to build the lake at the Bellagio because it uses less water than the golf course that used to sit there.
Anyhow, I live near Horizon Ridge/ Gibson...so, hello to ya, we are not too far away!!
