There's an interesting little town called Rugby where the Brits tried to establish a colony in the 1800s. If you're in the area, take an hour or two to visit. Also, the Oak Ridge museums and the Museum of Appalachia, all near Knoxville, are good. For the Civil War, Shiloh park about 100 miles southeast of Memphis is worth a visit. While you're there, go south about 30 miles to Corinth Mississippi to see the new Civil War Interpretative Center. Don't miss the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, where Dr. King was killed.

Check out The Chickamauga National Military Park..actually in GA, but just outside of Chattanooga, TN. In Chickamauga there is also the Gordon Lee Mansion that your wife may enjoy seeing.

If you'd like a good guide book that steers you away from the usual sites, try ordering a copy of Tennessee Off the Beaten Path. I believe there is book in this series for every state--I have the ones for Mississippi, Idaho, and Massachusetts. Your local bookstore can order one for you.
The Chattanooga/Chickamauga area is rife with Civil War history and places to see. You could easily spend a couple of days just in that area. |
