New York Off-Broadway Theater Aug 28-30

Hi Fodorites,

I'll be travelling to NY to see theater the weekend of 8/28 (have a friend with a show in the Fringe Fest). I'd like to see more plays Off or Off-Off Broadway, and I know of Playwright's Horizon, the Barrow Street and the E59E Street. Are there other theaters I should look into for dramatic plays (not comedies or musicals). Any plays you've been hearing good things about? I'm very interested in Brooklyn for this coming trip, too, so I'm not averse to travelling to that borough for worthwhile theater.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

The Manhattan Theatre Club has the production of Ruined. It's supposed to be amazing -- it won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

You may want to see other plays in the fringe festival go to fringenyc.org for the program. I'll be going to my first of 7 shows today.

Thank you, bethke14, Centralparkgirl and SueNYC!

I'll look into Ruined. I've read the script (my friend works at the Goodman Theatre here in Chicago) - I'm glad to hear it's a good production. I may have to see this one if I can get a ticket.

SueNYC - There are so many shows at the Fringe, it's hard to choose. If you have the time, would you let me know if you recommend any that you'll see this weekend?

FRINGE is guess work! slice the listings to the time you have available and read the writeups and see what appeals to you. On the weekend you are around I'm planning to see Kaddish and something about Peter Lawford's mother.

OK - I really enjoyed today's one woman show and it is playing when you are here. Now, I have a niece who graduated Princeton and is heading to Harvard to do a PHD in classics so it kind of resonated although the heroine went through this in the early 80's.
