Things to do in Sante Fe New Mexico
I am thinking of visiting Sante Fe and was wondering what the attractions may be in this city apart from the architecture
|
Great museums (my two faves are Georgia O'Keefe and Int'l Folk Art, the latter being one of my favorite museums in the world).

Amazing Native American pueblos nearby, particularly Taos and Pecos.

Bondolier Nat'l Monument (ancient cave dwellings).

Plenty of outdoor sports (rafting, skiing, hiking).

Breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

Dependably sunny weather.

Lovely sunsets.

Some excellent spas.

The former homes of Georgia O'Keefe and DH Lawrence, among others.

A more vital art gallery scene than any US city except NYC and LA.

Lots of jewelry stores (not a draw for me, but I know many people love it).

And amazing, AMAZING food (particularly if you like Tex-Mex or Mexican) including Pasqual's, Santacafe, Coyote Cafe, Inn of the Anastazi.

Of course, not all these are within the city itself. You'll really need to rent a car and drive to see all the worthwhile stuff, but the scenery is so gorgeous (and so different from much of the rest of the US) that even time in the car is interesting.

My compliments, rtb, you've done an outstanding job of highlighting the many attractions of Santa Fe. I'll especially give a solid endorsement to the International Folk Art Museum (one of our all-time favorites, as well) and the Santacafe Restaurant (be sure to sit in the patio).
I'd add one attraction: the shops along Canyon Road; and one very minor correction on the spelling of Bandolier!

Daniel -- If you're flying to Albuquerque, you may also want to spend a day or two there. The Sandia Tram is incredible (world's highest?). If you are interested in military/war/space the atomic museums in Albuquerque and Los Alamos are fascinating places.

One of my favorite things in Santa Fe is just strolling through the plaza; the tourists and the locals are usually interesting. Love the food, too.
Does anyone know more about the Georgia O'Keefe museum and home? Are they open to the public year round? What works are part of the permanent collection of the Museum? My mother is very interested in going to Santa Fe but has not been able to learn much about the Georgia O'Keefe museum and home.

The O'Keefe home is open to the public now; it is about an hour's drive northwest of Sante Fe, but gorgeous scenery (with a few towns in between). Reservations need to be made months in advance. My info is at home, but you can e:mail me and I will give you the address. The museum is open regularly (probably closed on the universal "closed on Mondays"); when we were there it had the traveling show we had already seen in Washington, DC, so I can't speak to its usual collection. Do a little reading on O'Keefe before you go so you will have a better appreciation of the house. No photos allowed which killed me! The shadows were paintings in themselves!! (I am an artist.....)
