things to do in NYC that avoid standing/walking
4 of us heading t oNYC and one of us broke a toe and has trouble walking/standng for long periods.Well be there 4 days--any suggestions for things to do/see would be greatly appreciaetd--we'd like to not cancel--thanks

Most of the museums can provide wheelchairs if you arrange it in advance - so that's what I would focus on. Boat rides and bus tours (which ordinarily I would NOT reco) will also help somewhat. Since the subways usually involves stairs - steep, narrow and often a couple of flights - I would plan on travel by city bus (slow and you often won;t get a seat) or cab.
Do not do the HOHO bus - since it runs only every 30 minutes or so - and can be full when it arrives.

NYC has a great bus system that is used by everybody. A 1-day pass for unlimited bus and subway rides is $8.25--a great investment. Learn the bus system, and enjoy.

The toe should be healed by then so probably no need to worry about it. I know how you feel as a friend of mine broke his leg 3 months before our DC trip. We were worried about it but come our trip it was much better. Still hobbling but he did very well.

kingofnyc.com is a good bus tour in a/c bus. I think Grayline also does some tours in closed a/c buses. Nywaterway.com does a good 90 harbor cruise and has a/c inside if it's too hot. Check goldstar.com closer to your trip which often has good discounts on various cruises and other events.

Re - using a wheelchair in museums: You need not make any previous arrangements to obtain use of a wheelchair at the Met. Use the street level 81 St. entrance and you will find the wheelchairs at the coat check.

Last check, there's a really great park in the middle of Manhattan where she can hang out, relax and watch the world go by for a bit.
And don't take buses in Manhattan unless you have to, take trains -- way faster. Buses in Manhattan are excruciatingly slow.

I take buses all the time.
The cross town buses can be very slow but there are advantages, especially for tourists. And that is seeing the city for $2.25 instead of underground or on the $40 Hop Off bus.

We were in NYC for the month July, 2009, and took buses everywhere. They are a great way to see the city and the people who live there. If that doesn't interest you--take taxis or the on-and-off bus.
I don't recommend subways to those who have difficulty walking.
