Things to do and see around Pinehurst
 

We will be visiting Pinehurst for four days in June, playing golf once, and would like to know if there are any other interesting things to do and see within say 1-2 hours drive. We are from the UK, in our sixties but active enough.

In & around Asheboro there are tons of potters, take a look @ www.discoverseagrove.com & www.ncpotterycenter.com. There have everything from expensive art pieces to inexpensive everyday use items. Make sure you visit Ben Owen & Phil Morgan. Of course the sport of NASCAR is centered north of Charlotte in & around Concord & Mooresville. For wine, there are several in & around Winston-Salem. www.ncwine.org or www.ncwinegrowers.com. There is also, of course, Charlotte. www.charlotte.com.

There's not a lot in Pinehurst other than golf. You could easily spend a day walking around Southern Pines and the Village of Pinehurst. As previously mentioned, there is a "Pottery Trail" if you are interested in looking at different artist. I'm not sure when you are coming, the local community college will be having a free jazz concert in June. There's also a harness track that has horse shows on some weekends. Charlotte is about 2 1/2 hrs away. Winston-Salem about 1 hr 45 mins. There's the Old Town of Salem that you might find interesting. The beach is about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. Mountains about 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. Fort Bragg is just under an hour and there is a couple of military museums there if that interests you. Otherwise, it's golf and tennis.

Interestingly, the clay that made Wedgwood famous -- jasper--is also present in Seagrove. It is Seagrove, not Ashboro that you want to visit. Endless potteries. There is a nice museum at Jugtown.
Raleigh has a nice museum. Charlotte is about 2 hours, and has several nice museums and good restaurants.
Chapel Hill is a nice visit.

I mentioned Asheboro as the general area as Seagrove will not show up on a map until you zoom way in. Asheboro will actually be the farthest point away from where you are staying as most of the potters are south of there (& Seagrove is probably about 15 miles south). The Zoo is also in Asheboro.

You are correct--it is hardly a crossroads, but they might just strike out for Ashboro and wonder where the potteries were!
