Things I hate about Vegas

I was just invited on a trip to vegas.

It made me think about the things I hate about vegas.

You can stay at the Wynn and Bellagio, but can't get a coffee maker in your room. I don't want stale room service coffee - I want coffee on my on terms and I don't think I should have to bring my own machine to highend top of the line hotels.

You can stay at the Wynn and Bellagio, but cannot stroll and hang out by the pool. Opens in the morning and shuts down at sunset. What's the point????

I wanna hang by the pool in a lounge chair at night!!!!

What do you hate about Vegas?

bratsandbeer Dec 28th, 2008 07:06 AM

Nothing - I love Vegas.

gyppielou Dec 28th, 2008 07:07 AM

Excellent positive attitude bratsandbeer!

sylvia3 Dec 28th, 2008 07:33 AM

I also hate the pool schedules; it's to keep people gambling during certain hours, I suppose, but how much difference can those people make?!

Aduchamp1 Dec 28th, 2008 07:48 AM

Vegas is like Miniie Mouse with an STD. Everything is false about the city. New York is next to Egypt which is next to Paris. The entertainment is practiced and expensive.

I went to the Venetian on business and finally yelled at the people in the gondolas, it's fake. You're in teh lobby of a hotel in the dessert.

We ate at one of the restaurants in the erstaz San Marco. I pointed out that where the Jimmy Choo was located was actually where in reality the cathedral is located.

I ordered a steak, since someone else was paying and asked for it rare. When it came out it looked well done. Someone said I should send it back but I demured. The other person called over the waiter. The waiter explained the steak was actually rare but the blue from the painted sky above combined with the red of the steak made it look black. I held up my baked potato and said, "See it is really a french fry."

NewbE Dec 28th, 2008 07:55 AM

The cigarette smoke! Hands down, that is my least favorite thing about any casino, for that matter. And yes, higher-end hotels reek less, but they still reek to a non-smoker like me.

All the fakery wears on me, too, but I can enjoy it on its own terms for a 2 or 3 days before I find myself shouting at gondolas.

John Dec 28th, 2008 08:49 AM

Losing

nytraveler Dec 28th, 2008 09:06 AM

Most everything. It's a really boring place. Just as fake as Disney - except for adults.

Have been twice (for conventions - no choice) and wouldn't go back voluntarily.

karens Dec 28th, 2008 09:21 AM

I hate their marketing slogan, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas".

I'm not sure I want to hang out with people who find that slogan an appealing thought.

I've said this before - while I don't think Vegas is for kids, I enjoyed it more with my kids. We had fun riding the roller coaster and showing them the illusions in the casinos. I also appreciated the illusions MORE after seeing the real Venice, Paris, etc.

coldplay Dec 28th, 2008 10:13 AM

comment to aduchamp1 - yes we know its all fake, yes we know gondolas shouldn't be in an hotel foyer, yes we know that New York is not next to Paris (not sad enough to know that Jimmy Choo is where the Cathedral should be) but what the heck its fabulous for all that and even because of all that.

coldplay Dec 28th, 2008 10:17 AM

With regard to the comments about the pools closing early in Vegas, it depends on where you stay, the higher end hotels seem to close early, but the middle range stay open later, its good to check first, the Suncoast is open till 10pm.

Marginal Dec 28th, 2008 10:23 AM

1. I hate the Las Vegas airport, especially the Southwest section.

sf7307 Dec 28th, 2008 10:35 AM

Pretty much everything.

pop Dec 28th, 2008 05:23 PM

Vegas is a highly contrived marketing experiment on steroids. Every individual is viewed as a pawn for the forces of Vegas to try to manipulate.

Get this, the "bistro" in the Paris hotel served pizza and Dim Sum. What? The TV in my room had no guide available for TV stations. Front desk confirmed they did not provide such.

Vegas is all sizzle and no steak!!

Virgogirl Dec 28th, 2008 09:13 PM

I hate it when I'm strolling with my husband and all those little Mexican guys are shoving handbills advertising callgirls in his face. They're very pushy about it and seem to be everywhere.

We love the buffets and the shows, but it gets pretty boring by the second day.

Little_Man Dec 28th, 2008 09:58 PM

I hated Vegas with my kids. Loved it with just my husband
I agree gyppielou about the great hotel rooms, but no coffee maker! That's why I love staying at the Signature now, and like the condohotels.

Aduchamp1 Dec 29th, 2008 12:18 AM

I am not sure about that. Have you ever been to a wrestling match? The cheering and concern for their heroes is real. The same in Vegas, many seem to be satisfied with false subsitutes. I have not been to Egypt, but I would prefer that over some marketeer's version of it.

LSky Dec 29th, 2008 12:52 AM

I can't think of anything I like about Vegas. The fakiness doesn't bother me, I expect it.

The cigarette smoke is horrible.

I hate the buffets, it just seems like bad food ready to be wasted.

But the number one thing I don't like about Vegas is when I walked through the casinos, it didn't seem like people were really having a good time. They are like robots fixed on their slot machines, not happy just addicted.

I feel very out of place and out of joy there.

SrFlojo Dec 29th, 2008 10:45 AM

I hate that I have to decide between dozens of fantastic shows. I disdain the restarurant options, both on and off the strip. Sure it snows and rains a lot where I live and in Vegas it seems that the sun shines most of the time. Finally, I am not much of a shopper, yet my dear family always finds some bargains in the shops. Do I want to be there for a week or two, no way! But give me a long weekend with the wife and or friends and watch out fun-meter.

FainaAgain Dec 29th, 2008 10:53 AM

All you Vegas-haters should start a thread "what Vegas hates about us" :))

Why do you waste your feelings on hating something that millions enjoy? Is this because you think this city deserves your attention?

kureiff Dec 29th, 2008 10:58 AM

I don't like the noise, the smoke, and I also want a coffee maker in my room.

But it's sunny and warm in Vegas in April when it's still cold and snowy at home. That makes up for a lot!

LSky Dec 29th, 2008 10:59 AM

"Why do you waste your feelings on hating something that millions enjoy? Is this because you think this city deserves your attention?"

No but I like answering non earth shattering questions on the internet.

charlotteguy Dec 29th, 2008 12:10 PM

I hate all that wonderful food at the Bellagio and Wynn buffets. I can not eat it all....I hate that :^)

I hate that I had the opportunity to sit on the 10th row and see Cher perform...oh I soooo hated that.

I love Vegas...especially for a long weekend.

logos999 Dec 29th, 2008 12:14 PM

>Things I hate about Vegas
They want tips. It should be all inclusive.

vegasnative Dec 29th, 2008 12:52 PM

I hate tourists that come to Vegas and grip the entire time they are there, and then turn around and keep coming back each year. ;)

coldplay Dec 29th, 2008 01:12 PM

vegasnative - good one, I was wondering that myself. I for one love it for what it is, seems some people take it far too seriously.

GoTravel Dec 29th, 2008 02:34 PM

I hate that it is so damn expensive.

When did Vegas get so expensive? What happened to the $0.99 shrimp cocktail?

I'm not talking about gambling either.

I love Vegas!

gyppielou Dec 29th, 2008 02:48 PM

I have fully enjoyed the defenders of vegas, and what they love, because there is as much to hate about vegas, as there is to love about vegas. I love breakfast at 4am at the Wynn Cafe!

karens Dec 29th, 2008 03:12 PM

I thought of another one.

I hate the blast furnace heat of the summer in Vegas.

I love to fly into Vegas, b/c it usually means we're going to explore Utah or Arizona.

VegasMan Jan 15th, 2009 11:31 PM

I hate the whiney tourists.

jbee Jan 16th, 2009 09:56 AM

Vegas locals unite!

Everyone else, whine all you want, just come back. :) (Just one thing... When you're walking, please don't stop in the middle of the path if I'm behind you - that's really annoying.)

Hey Marginal - I used to hate the Southwest part of the airport too, but we flew out of there in December and it's sooo nice now. There's a new security checkpoint right next to the Southwest check-in counter, so you don't walk all the way down there just to walk all the way back anymore. After security, there's people movers that get you right to the gate areas - no more trams. It was excellent!

eagle3 Feb 6th, 2009 06:04 PM

The lack of vegetarian options...

mrwunrfl Feb 6th, 2009 07:00 PM

"Vegas is a highly contrived marketing experiment on steroids. Every individual is viewed as a pawn for the forces of Vegas to try to manipulate."

Oh, you mean like commercial TV?

Fake? What's fake? You mean that isn't the real Eiffel Tower?

I was sitting waiting for a jetBlue flight to LGB. They were boarding a flight to New York and I asked why they were flying to New York. It is right over there, see the skyline?

They don't have coffee machines in a lot of the rooms because of the requirements that they have to clean them.

jojo46 Feb 7th, 2009 08:53 AM

Like others, love my in-suite morning coffee. Stayed at 2 high end hotels in Vegas and didn't like the wait nor cost of room service coffee for one (DH doesn't drink it) Surely rates should include cleaning/servicing.

Now know why Walgreen's on the Strip had stacks of small, inexpensive coffee makers for sale!

Giovanna Feb 7th, 2009 10:07 AM

I don't hate Vegas, but I must admit I liked it better before the "bean counters and MBAs" came in and redesigned it. Every hotel I fondly remember has been razed and another phony, bazillion room monstrosity replaces them. Ah the days of the Rat Pack!

trippinkpj Feb 7th, 2009 10:34 AM

I like Vegas, though I hate the smokiness in downtown/ Fremont street casinos and traffic on the strip. Oh, and ITA with you gyppielou on the lack of coffee makers in the room. I'd also like mini refrigerators there, which are hard to get in Vegas hotel rooms.

Mamaw Feb 7th, 2009 10:36 AM

When they hand you that smut on the street while your with your family. I mean really, if you have some teenagers with you (they weren't mine) don't hand them smut advertising hookers and whores.

Numbers Feb 7th, 2009 06:08 PM

There are a lot of things I hate, but nothing more than watching some poor soul crying at a gaming table after (presumably) losing way more than they could afford to lose. Very sad.

mrwunrfl Feb 8th, 2009 11:40 PM

It was a front desk person at the Rio that explained why they don't have coffee makers in all the rooms. They are required to scrub and disinfect the pot and reservoir after use. To do that they remove one to get it cleaned and replace it with a clean one. So it would be a big production to supply one to every room and would require a couple of people doing nothing all day but cleaning coffee pots and makers. So they don't put them in the lower priced rooms.

So I was told.

marly528 Feb 9th, 2009 12:40 AM

Why doesn't Vegas, a modern innovative city have smoking and non-smoking areas in the Casinos? Not just areas where smoke can travel but separate rooms. There are now just as many non-smokers, if not more and they should also be considered. Otherwise I love Vegas.
