THEHotel Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas
 

We're thinking of staying athe THEHotel Mandalay Bay Las Vegas in August this year - anyone stayed recently? I read somewhere that it is a long trek to the pool area, is there another pool nearer to this Tower? Any help would be invaluable. Thanx alot.

Here's a copy of the review I posted last month. BTW, THEhotel does not have its own pool. One will be built later, but not open this summer I was told.

Overall I think Mandalay did a very nice job with THEhotel (wish they'd change the name...not very catchy IMO). THEhotel is nothing at all like Mandalay Bay. Totally different concept and design.
Since it's a new hotel tower everything is very clean, sharp and nice. It's a very upscale feeling place, without even a hint of cheesiness. You'd never know you were in Las Vegas from anywhere inside THEhotel or its rooms.
It has a modern flair to it, so it's not grand scale opulence, more like one of the new Four Seasons (San Francisco) or Ritz Carltons (Boston). We had a rate of $169, but rates have recently been running much higher.

Here are the basics:
--standard rooms = 750 sq. ft.
--colors are rather 'bachelor pad'-ish; furniture is black lacquer and retro 1960's kind of style in living room (tastefully done IMO), and similar but modern feeling in bedroom; bathroom had dark brown marble shower, nice size, separate water closet, tub and shower separate.
--42" plasma TV/DVD in living room, large flat screen TV in BR (~32 inch), and small plasma TV in bathroom
--living room and bedroom are entirely separate so this is a true suite set-up, unlike Venetian's long single room with small step-down
--towels relatively thick and much better than average quality (for Las Vegas)
--toiletries were house brand
--very quiet/peaceful hotel and halls
--hotel attaches to Mandalay at the Sports Book corner of the casino
--THEhotel will have its own pool but this is not yet complete; of course access to Mandalay's complex is included, though.

Gripes: the carpeting (rooms and halls) will not wear well and will look crummy and cheap in nothing flat. Same with some of the couch and chair upholstery in the rooms. It's going to wear in a hurry. Looks fine now.
Also, the entrance is hard to find, poorly marked, in the back of the property, and hard to recognize even when you're pulling up to it in the driveway.

Other impressions: hotel's lobby is very Asian-influenced and very stylish looking; 3 story ceilings with everything in black and soft yellow light; reminded me more of a stylish NYC hotel than anything in Las Vegas.

Entrance to THEhotel is on the I-15 side of the property off of Frank Sinatra Blvd; there's no direct access from the Strip.

Right now (in its current condition) I'd rate THEhotel higher than Venetian for overall room quality. The standard rooms at THEhotel are quite a bit more spacious (extra 240 sq ft) vs. Bellagio and offer very nice amenities, but I still like the overall experience better at Bellagio because of the restaurants, ambience, lake, location and style of the decor at Bellagio.
For a <standard room> at the same price, I'd probably choose THEhotel".

It is a very long trip to the pool area, and there is no pool closer...
If you like modern and trendy, you should be very happy with THEHotel. I guess i'm older, more traditional, and I was a little underwhelmed, although the bathrooms are nice, as are the comfortable beds, and big plasma tv's.
I was much happier with the "prettier" rooms at the Venetian, but like I said, I'm getting on in years!
Also, I've got to mention, the service at the hotel is just weird. Not at all customer oriented, and I am not a demanding customer!

Thanks to Frankie and Travleis for their constructive comments. We are coming to Las Vegas from England as part of our vacation this year and THEHotel appealed because of the size of the room! 750sqft is big enough for 3 of us without falling over each other and in each other's space. Can we request a room that overlooks the strip? I don't know where the sportsbook is. Is there anyway of seeing the layout of the Mandalay Bay property on the web somewhere? I thought I'd read the Moorea Pool was nearer to THEHotel than the main areas? Don't know what to do - 20mins is quite a walk!!

I think the Moorea pool is at the same complex as the other pools. I'd put the walk to the pool at more like 5-10 minutes, not 20.
THEhotel will be a great choice for 3, because of the 2 rooms. I also want to clarify my comment on service...At our checkin, the woman at the counter was great, and helpful.
The restaurants in the regular Mandalay Bay were where we encountered very slow service, and in valet parking...

THEhotel is not all that close to the Strip itself, and in fact Mandalay Bay is partially between THEhotel and the Strip (view-wise). Most of THEhotel's rooms have at least some view of the strip. One wall of the L-shaped hotel faces entirely away from the Strip. Request a room with Strip viewability.

THEhotel's main hallway connecting to Mandalay Bay enters MB right at the sports book. Passing the sports book is the only way to get from THEhotel into MB without walking outside.

The Moorea pool wasn't open when I was there last month. I'm not even sure I saw it.

We just got back from a stay at Thehotel and loved everything about it. The rooms are very luxurious. Very comfortable size for the 4 of us. Living room had floor to ceiling windows overlooking the strip, as did the bedroom. Beds were queen size and very comfortable. Bathroom is huge with large soaking tub and seperate shower. Also 1/2 bath in entryway.Kids loved the flat screened tv's, especially in the bathroom. We found the service to be very good here. There is a coffee bar and cafe off of the lobby. The pool was a 5-10 min. walk-not bad at all. Pool opened at 9 am. All seats were taken by 10 am, so get there early. We usually took the tram to the Luxor, and then walked to where we wanted to go on the strip. Then took a cab home at the end of the night. I would highly recommend this hotel.
