Theatre, On/Off Broadway, advice.

Planning is part of the fun of a trip, so here we go...
We'll be in NYC in October. We want to see one or two shows with our kids, 16 and 13.

We had lots of pleasure some -ooh gosh- 16 years ago when seeing 'Five guys named Moe' and 'Stomp'. The latter is still on, so we will probably take the kids to see it.
But we are also looking for the kind of show that could give us the thrills we had experiencing '5Guys named Moe', first of all the quality of the music by Louis Jordan, but also the rythmic and sheer pleasure we found in the actors' performance. We had first row seats and ended up dancing on stage with them.

Is there any thrilling, overall breathtaking, causing-tears-to-roll-over-one's-cheeks-because-of-the-laughter show going on on/off Broadway in October???

I didn't see the plays that you refer to, but check out the 'Book of Mormon,' but also look into the suitability for your 13 yr old. There will be many new things in the fall that haven't been announced yet.

Also, recommended for 14 and up is 'Rock of Ages,' but I haven't seen it.

Very different from what you saw with your kids is 'Catch Me If You Can.' IMO, I think teenagers would like it.

Who knows what will still be playing in Oct but you'll find my thoughts about kids and theatre in this group of posts.

(By the way, have your kids do the research and listen to the music and see what they like)

Your expectations are setting you up for disappointment, "Is there any thrilling, overall breathtaking, causing-tears-to-roll-over-one's-cheeks-because-of-the-laughter show".

We saw Rock of Ages - to me, it was pretty cheesy with lots of over the top 80s stereotypes. Other people seemed to love it though.

I meant to add that I don't think ROA is appropriate for kids that age; parts of it were pretty raunchy.

War Horse playing at Lincoln Center has opened to raves after raves in London. NOT funny, not a musical. That and Book of Mormon which is very irreverent are the standouts of the current season. By the fall, they may have resolved the problems with Spiderman and that might be an option.

PS Fueraer Bruta seems to be very popular with male teens/young adults

and ofcourse Blue Man Group which has been playing seemingly forever; both off Broadway. Both are regularly discounted. You might also have a look on highfivetix.com They get good discounts that teens can buy for themselves and parents.

I was aware we had a wonderful experience with '5 guys named Moe', so there's maybe too much wishful thinking on my behalf in hoping for the same quality.
I'll bookmark the references and check them in early September.
