Theater: prices to expect over holidays?
 

Visiting NYC for Thanksgiving holiday... want to buy some theater tix ahead of time - what should I expect to pay? We haven't seen anything yet so I was thinking of one of the older ones like Rent.

nikkilou, there are probably discount tickets for Rent and other older shows available at www.playbill.com and www.hitshowclub.com. You have to sign up for these sites, but it is free.

It's too early to find any discount offers for the end of November. Start checking Playbill.com and BroadwayBox.com in about a month or so to see what's available on discount. Rent has been available at $55-60 a ticket for quite a while.
Full price for musicals is around $100. Prices do not go up on holidays except New Year's Eve.

nikkilou, don't expect any of the popular shows to have discounts that week.

Tour operators buy out these show tickets months in advance.

If there is something you really want to see, buy it now.

If you want to know which shows are most likely to have discounted tickets, check the Playbill site and look for "Broadway Grosses." The shows with low attendance figures are probably going to be offering seats through the Tkts booths and other discounters.

While citylights' advice is valid, it's much easier to simply check the list of shows offering discounts when you go to the Playbill website!
