Theater District NYC -- A Great New Restaurant: La Pulperia

For tourists & locals alike, New York City's theater district is a wasteland of horrible, overpriced restaurants (with a few gems in the mix).

Last night my wife & I dined with friends at a new restaurant, La Pulperia, and it is excellent!

I had the pacu fish ribs --- amazing! Also the bespoke cocktails are not to be missed.

From Blackbook: "On a stretch of West 46th Street where elderly tourists in oversized jackets stuff every window frame, one might hope that Latin newcomer La Pulperia can remain a gem just hidden enough. Two weeks after opening the signage has yet to go up outside, and the staff are in playful debate about whether to keep it that way. The door marked 371 is well worth seeking out, especially if partaking in co-owner Victor Medina’s tequila offerings won’t compromise, I don’t know, your evening plans with another revival of Sister Act."

I agree this is a welcome addition but please explain to me what a "bespoke cocktail" actually is. Or is this some sort of "speak" for some new thing to add to the Goose in the glass?

In the cocktail context, "bespoke" typically refers to unique mixes created by true artists who take pride in their work.

In NYC, places like PDT and Raines Law Room are known for their bespoke concoctions.

At La Pulperia, the purees and other ingredients are made by hand every day, and one can taste it.

Sounds very good. I am curious about one thing, however. Are the owners friends of yours? I only ask because of the last place I remember you raving about which was owned by friends and ended up being one of the worst tourist traps in the Times Square area -- Havana Central. Just hoping it's not a repeat of that.

I do not know the owners of La Pulperia nor did I know the owners of Havana Central until I became a diner at the Union Square location and met one general manager (Jeremy).

Your cowardly bitterness is duly noted. If you have a grudge, be a man and just admit it. I expect little from you, however, other than your typical passive-aggressive cowardice.

I hav learned something new from that review, Gekko, that that fish whose ribs you ate is a cousin of the piranha and grows to be 60 lbs! I wondered how one could eat fish ribs but now I (sort of) understand.

Am going to NYC in early May and have been looking for another good place to eat before theater (already have E&E Grill booked for one night) so this sounds like it will fit that bill nicely. Thank you for the heads up.

Wonderful! We really enjoyed La Pulperia and I hope you do too. That area, around the theaters, is a notorious wasteland for diners, so it's exciting to discover a new diamond in the rough.
