Lexington KY! Lots of horse stuff to see, Berea is close for crafts, the Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill is close by, as well as a lot of bourbon distilleries and good shopping and restaurants!

Why not combine some of the above post ideas and take an extended trip along the Mississippi River on the Great River Road. You could start in St. Louis where you could explore the Arch and Forest Park before heading north to the town of Hannibal, made famous by author Mark Twain. Continue on to the Quad City area where the river flows east west. Arsenal Island, which is located in the middle of the river right next to Lock & Dam #15, is worth a stop. This island was a Confederate prision camp during the CW with nearly 2,000 soldiers burried on the island. The island still houses a weapons arsenal and was one of Wilson's 'arsenals of democracy' during WWI. There's a great viewing area and educational display on the workings of locks on the tip of the island as well as an amazing double decker bridge (top level rail, bottom level auto) that rotates 180 degrees in either direction to accommodate the boats coming out of the locks. A small museum on the island holds weapons used at the Battle of Little Big Horn and larger weapons of war are displayed nearby.

Continue north and take a ten mile detour to historic Galena IL, the town US Grant called home before heading off to the Civil War. A small local museum has lots of connections to General Grant. Return to the river at Dubuque where the drive becomes more scenic. The area around La Crosse has amazing bluffs that should not be missed. How far you travel north is up to you, but you won't be disappointed in the people or the scenery along the route.

Southern Oregon and true Northern California. Crater Lake national Park, Mount Shasta, Lava Beds, and Lake Siskyou. Abslutely georgous. Lots of swimming. Cool at night. Great for camping. Medicine Lake and Fish lake are also pretty great.
