The Ultimate Baby on Plane Story

Dave Barry's syndicated column this Sunday was just hysterical. Read it at:
http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/pri...-2001Jan4.html
Wow. That's a long url -- but it is probably the best column Dave's done in months. No matter which side you've been on, this is right on!

I remember struggling down the aisle with a collapsed umbrella stroller, a 3.5-year old, a diaper bag over one shoulder, a purse over the other, carrying a squirming 9 month old, with boarding passes in one hand, half-way to our seats (probably row 23 or so) when a flight attendant materialized saying "oh, can I help?" I felt like saying, "that's ok, he can crawl this short a distance now!" (I learned from experience. That was my last flight by myself with little ones...and we soon simplified our trips to places to which we could DRIVE.)

That reminds me of an episode from the old "I Love Lucy" tv series, which just happened to air again the other night. Lucy wanted to bring back some cheese from Europe for her Mother. Ricky didn't want to pay the extra fee the airline charged for the cheese, as it weighed 25 lbs. Lucy overheard that a baby could fly for free, so she wrapped the cheese in a baby blanket. She had to pretend to give a bottleand burp the cheese. When she foound out that the airline charged for a baby on an overseas flight, she and Ethel ate some of hte cheese and put what was left inside the musical instruments of Ricky's band. It was hilarious when the airline thought Lucy had disposed of her baby.

Times sure have changed. These days, if you heard about a woman disposing of a baby on a plane, it would probably be a true story. So sad.

Talking about funny, does anybody remember the Bill Cosby story about his flight from the east coast to California with a woman and her son, Jeffrey?

flyingfool May 3rd, 2002 06:37 AM

I do remember the Cosby routine about about Jeffrey, it was funny as hell!

Hilarious!!!
From all the arguements on this board about the topic, it's nice to read a parent's perspective that acknowledges the problems in a funny, funny way:)
