THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BARBARY COAST
 

After reading through the reviews on the cheapovegas.com site, I booked a room at the Barbary Coast in late April for $59 a night. Cheapovegas.com listed the rooms as very good and the hotel as an excellent value. But after reading some recent comments and doing a search, I'm starting to think I may have made the wrong choice. The word dump makes me nervous (though one person who used the word admitted to never having stayed there). So what is the truth? Is it a nice room for a good price or has the information on cheapovegas.com become outdated? Should I start to look elsewhere? It seems that Bally's and the Flamingo get their share of criticism also.

While the Barbary Coast is in a nice location, the hotel/casino itself isn't very nice. It is a third rate property at best. If price is a big consideration, you would be better off checking some nicer places that are either off the strip or downtown. See<BR>http://www.lvol.com for some help.

I like the Barbary Coast for gambling (good nickel slots!) but not for staying in their rooms. For $59 you can get a room at New York, New York which is much, much nicer!

I went on lvol.com and checked out the comments on this hotel and they were mostly favorable. So why so many negative comments here?

I love Barbary Coast and have stayed at many others hotels. Best for value, great prime rib and win most times at this hotel. We frequent Vegas 1 or 2 times a year. Ask for a room facing Bellagio fountains. You won't be disappointed on the location either.

Don, you've posted dozens of questions (it seems) over the past few months about Arizona and LV, so i'm sure you've got the basic idea down about people's opinions of hotels.<BR>If people are paying top dollar their expectations are very high.<BR>If they're getting a great deal, they don't expect much (in general).<BR>So people will only tend to criticize someplace like Barbary Coast if it's REALLY below par, while they'll rant about Bellagio if the valets are a tad slow.<BR><BR>The point is you have to put people's comments into proper context. People who CHOOSE to stay at BC are much less likely to be critical about it in the first place----unless they stay there without any prior research and don't know what to expect (pretty uncommon, I'd think).<BR><BR>If you only look at the rooms/service and casino, Barbary Coast is probably in the bottom 4 or 5 hotels on the main strip (Holiday Inn and Stardust and Riviera are all in the same company). But its location is a plus.

I totally agree with Mike above. If you stay at Bellagio, Venetian or Caesars you arrive expecting more because you paid more. They all have reputations to uphold. Barbary Coast just isn't in the same league, but for $59 a night I'd think Bally's, Paris or Treasue Island is a better value and all are well positioned on the strip.

Got sick after eating lunch at the Barbary Coast. The whole place looks tired, worn and a bit down at the heel. Bally's and the Flamingo are run by large companies and offer a much more reliable product.

Check out Bally's if you're concerned about BC. I stayed there this summer and the room was very, very nice. <BR>All have been remodeled and are very large. Their prices are pretty low as well. In addition they share a casino with Paris.
