The terra-cotta warriors are coming to Washington DC

Many of you may be aware of this, but I just learned that the terra-cotta warriors from Xian are coming to the National Geographic Society in Washington DC.

I would love to see this exhibit. It runs from November 19, 2009 through March 31, 2010. I think we are going to try to get tickets for December sometime. We have not yet visited The National Geographic Society Museum; it has been on my list of things to do in Washington.

Very exciting!!

There was also an article about them in Smithsonian Magazine a couple of months ago also

I'm sure that this will be a worthwhile exhibit.
I saw the originals in Xian last year. What made it so amazing was the size of the room where the statues are. It must be at least the size of 2(maybe more)football fieldx and to see these warriors lined up is thrilling. The scope of the entire sight is truly awesome.
That being said, not everyone can get to Xian - so go to DC instead. I'm sure you'll love it.

I wish I knew when they were in California :((

Thank you for the Heads Up!! I think it would be awesome to see!

Thank you for this, karens. We saw something similar years ago in Houston and it was fantastic.

Is this the same as the London exhibition? A friend went and although she enjoyed it she said there were rather few warriors.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'd love to see this exhibit. Greg

Dayenu - you missed them, they were in LA area in the spring of this year.

Lolo12, the really amazing part of the size of that site in Xian is that there is the suspicion that the ranks of warriors may extend all the way to Quing's tomb on a small mountain a mile away. Every face is different.

Many of the dates are already sold out. If you are planning to go and know the date, go ahead and get your tickets NOW.

The exhibit has been in Houston for the past several months and it is absolutely worth seeing. Very well done and, at least in Houston, there was a real surprise which added some drama to the exhibit. It is very intersting even for those who have seen the original site in Xian. Highly recommend it.

I'm planning to go in November specifically for this exhibition. Until I get to China, it will certainly satisfy my curiosity!

Ditto the suggestion to get tickets NOW!! Admission is by ticket only, for the specific half-hour you have reserved.

I will be in DC the first week in February. On October 3 I tried I tried to reserve 2 tickets for Saturday, February 6 and that day was already completely sold out - 4 months in advance. Luckily, I could get them for Sunday morning instead.

We saw them in California at the Bowers Museum. The exhibit was a bit smaller than I hoped but still worthwhile. I think the ticket prices were higher than you're paying in DC but can't remember exactly.

"Saturday, February 6 and that day was already completely sold out"

That Saturday and the first Sat. show as sold out. I wonder if there is a special group their on Feb. 6

That is so cool - thanks for posting Karens! DC is on mine and dh's short list - but not thinking we will make it before they leave.

karens Oct 13th, 2009 12:56 PM

I just ordered tickets today - I'm looking forward to it. (Our were during Christmas week, and they weren't sold out).

volcanogirl Oct 13th, 2009 02:24 PM

I need to see it before it leaves. I think this is the last weekend here. I've heard it's great.

Cries_Van_Notebook Oct 13th, 2009 02:31 PM

I saw the warriors when I was in Xian in May, 2000. I went down into the pit where the warriors were being excavated and also to the museum where the restored warriors are on display.

I also met the farmer who discovered the warriors whilst he was plowing his field.
